COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s lacrosse head coach Joe Breschi announced the five players who will serve as captains for the Buckeyes this season. Seniors Greg Bice (Helotes, Texas/St. Mary’s Hall), Matt Cafarelli (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scoito), Anthony Gilardi (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and Tony Russo (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) and junior Tom Randisi (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) were selected by a vote of their teammates.

“The neat thing about this group of captains is they are the best at each position,” Breschi said. “They cover the entire field and we are going to have leadership at all spots on the field.”

Cafarelli, a defenseman, is in his second season as captain. He was injured in the Buckeyes’ first game last season and received a medical redshirt. He has played in 22 games as a Buckeye and was the Paul Hartman Most Improved Player in 2002.

Bice, also a defenseman, was an honorable mention All-American last year and a first team All-Great Western Lacrosse League honoree the past two seasons. He saw action in all 14 games last year and was second on the team with a career-best 50 groundballs.

Gilardi, an attackman, ranked third on the team in goals (16) and points (26) last season while playing in 12 games. He enters his senior season with 90 career points. He was an All-GWLL selection in 2002.

Russo, the Buckeyes’ starting goalie the last three seasons, was the 2003 GWLL Player of the Year and a STX/USILA All-America honorable mention recipient as a junior last year and is a two-time All-GWLL honoree.

Randisi, a midfielder, was a second-team all-league choice as a sophomore last year. He has started all 28 games as a Buckeye and has at least one point in 22 of his games.

The Buckeyes, the 2003 GWLL co-Champion and a 2003 NCAA Championship participant, open their season at 1 p.m. Feb. 21 when they play host to Penn State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
