COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team outscored Air Force, 8-1, in the second half to erase a three-goal halftime deficit and beat the host Falcons, 11-7, Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo. The win, OSU’s eighth in a row over Air Force, moves the Buckeyes’ record to 5-6 on the year and 2-1 in the Great Western Lacrosse League, while the Falcons fall to 4-7 and 1-3 in the league.
Junior Andrew Bender led the Buckeyes with two assists and four points against the Falcons, while Ben Wolff, Craig Nolan and Kyle Olson each had two goals. Nolan added an assist to rank second on the team with three points.
The Falcons scored three goals in just over three minutes in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead. Will Meister scored at 7:07 and 4:04, sandwiching a Justin Kuchta goal at 5:35. The Buckeyes’ Wolff (Jr., Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall), assisted by Nolan (Jr., Plano, Texas/Dallas Jesuit College Prep), got OSU on the board with a goal with 2:12 remaining in the opening stanza and Kyle Olson (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) cut the Falcon lead to one (3-2) with a goal less than a minute into the second quarter (14:18). Air Force then went on a three-goal run in a little more than two minutes, starting with a Max Miller man-up goal at 7:05, followed by a John Smith tally at 6:29 and Conrad Lochocki’s goal with 5:10 remaining in the half, moving the Falcons’ lead to 6-2. OSU then went on a five-goal run and scored nine of the next 10 goals for the win. Andrew Bender (Jr., Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) scored with 4:18 remaining in the first half to send OSU into halftime trailing, 6-3.
Ricky Pages (Fr., East Rockaway, N.Y./Lynbrook) tallied just over three minutes into the second half, followed by Nolan’s goal (set up by Bender) at 10:26. Wolff, off an assist from Jason Bloom, tied the game at 6-all with his goal with 9:19 on the clock. Jason Lutz (So., Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) ended the Buckeye run and put OSU ahead for the first time in the game (and for good) with a goal at 6:16. AFA’s Conrad Cochocki stopped the Buckeye goal streak with a goal with 5:03 left in the third quarter, closing the scoring in the stanza.
OSU scored the only goals of the fourth quarter for the 11-7 win. Nolan, assisted by Bender, scored with 7:02 remaining, followed by Olson’s second goal of the game 17 seconds later. Bender scored a goal of his own with 3:20 on the clock and Eric O’Brien (So., Powell, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) ended the scoring with a goal 20 seconds later.
Ohio State outshot the Falcons, 53-37. Mike Rimmer (r-Fr., Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) made 13 saves in the Buckeye net, while Justin Pavoni had 19 saves for the Falcons.
The Buckeyes close out the regular season with three consecutive home games. Ohio State will take on Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Friday and Fairfield at noon next Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The regular-season finale is against Army at noon May 7 at North Turf Field.
Bender led the Buckeyes with two assists and four points against Air Force. He had a career-best four assists Friday at Denver and leads OSU with a career-best 13 assists after entering the year with three career helpers. Bender is on a nine-game scoring streak overall and now has a career-best 20 points, topping the 15 he had last season.
Nolan’s two goals marked his fifth consecutive multiple-goal game, including four goals Friday at Denver. He is on a six-game goal-scoring streak and now has a career-best 14 goals this season.
Wolff’s goals extended his point-scoring streak to 17, dating back to last season. He is the only Buckeye with at least one point in all 11 games this season and has a goal in all 10 outings.
Olson’s two goals moved his scoring streak to nine and his goal streak to seven. Lutz has a goal in three consecutive games.
Senior Tom Randisi was held scoreless, ending his point and goal streaks at eight.
Pages’ goal was the first of his career.
