COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (2-4-0, 2-2-0 WCHA) lost to the Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-0-0, 4-0-0 WCHA), 2-1, Saturday at the OSU Ice Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

“We were very pleased with the effort and the game we played this evening,” Jackie Barto, OSU head coach, said. “We put a lot of pressure on Minnesota and created a lot of opportunities for ourselves. Our penalty kills were outstanding.”

The Buckeyes were looking for a win against the Golden Gophers in game two of the series. Minnesota led Ohio State 9-3 in shots in the first period. The Buckeye defense held the Gophers scoreless during the period.

OSU came out strong in the second period. The Buckeyes had several scoring opportunities but were unable to get the puck by Minnesota’s goalkeeper, Brenda Reinen. Late in the period, the Gophers scored two goals within 1:31 of each other. Minnesota led Ohio State 2-0.

Ohio State’s Shana Frost (Sr., Frankford, Ontario/Beatrice North York Areos) scored on a power play from Katie Frohreich (Sr., Baudette, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) and Jeni Creary (So., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame) 4:24 into the third period. OSU pulled its goalkeeper with 30 seconds to go. The Buckeyes fought hard for another goal and came close several times but were unable to succeed.

Senior April Stojak (Sr., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) played 19:30 in the net for Ohio State, recording 29 saves. Reinen played the full 60:00, recording 28 saves.

Individually, Jeni Creary (So., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame) led the team with six shots. Jana Harrigan (Fr., Burlington, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) registered five shots and Frost four. Ohio State held Minnesota scoreless on all seven of its power-play opportunities. OSU was 1-for-6 on its power plays. The Gophers barely out shot the Buckeyes 31-29.

“We are confident that if we keep playing at this level, our opportunities will turn into goals,” Barto said. “The team portrayed the characteristics that is Ohio State women’s hockey.”

Ohio State travels to Bemidji, Minn. When it takes on the Bemidji State Beavers at 8:05 p.m. Friday and 5:05 p.m. EDT Saturday in the John S. Glas Fieldhouse.
