Senior Carling Coffing opens with a 67 as five Buckeyes sit in the Top 20
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s golf team opened the first day of the Lady Buckeye Invitational in second place with a score of 603 (300-303) on its home course, the par-72, 6,228-yard Scarlet Course in Columbus. The Buckeyes trail 15th-ranked Kent State, who leads the tournament with a two-round total of 593. Northwestern is third (607) and No. 16 Michigan State is fourth (613) in a 12-team field that features eight Big Ten teams. The two-day, 54-hole event will conclude Sunday with the third and final round beginning with a shotgun at 8:30 a.m.
Ohio State had five student-athletes finish in the Top 25. Senior Carling Coffing not only led the way for the Buckeyes on day one, but also led the individual standings through the first 18 holes and for a majority of the second round. The Middletown, Ohio, native led by three strokes after opening the day with a 67, her lowest round of the year as well as the lowest round shot by any Buckeye this season.
Coffing’s score of 5-under par tied the tournament single-round record and is one stroke shy of the course record, set during the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Her 67 was a bogey-free round with five birdies. She concludes the first two rounds with a score of even-par at 144.
After opening with a 76, junior Gemma Webster came back with three birdies and a 73 during the second round. The Buckeye captain from Glasgow, Scotland, finished the day tied for fifth at 5-over 149.
Tied for 15th is junior Jessica Hauser; the Hartland, Wis., native carded two rounds of 78 to total 156. Sophomore Emma Jandel and senior Haley Brown who concluded day one tied for 20th a stroke back at 157. Jandel, of Dayton, Ohio, opened the day with a 79 and added a second round of 78 to finish with a two-round score of 157. Brown, of Austin, Texas, struggled on the first 18 holes with an 82, but was able to bring her second round score down to 75.
Freshman In Hong Lim started the day for the Buckeyes with an 80 but was forced to withdraw because of injury.
Playing for Ohio State as individuals are redshirt-freshman Gina Besozzi and junior Jennifer Cassidy. Besozzi finished day one tied for 32nd (82-78160) and Cassidy sits tied for 67th (86-88174).
