COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing team finished the first day of the NCAA Championships in fourth place with 51 points. The first day of the event featured three rounds of women’s competition in which each fencer faced 15 total opponents.
The foil unit led the squad in today’s competition, finishing with 22 points. Both foilists made strong starts in their NCAA Championship debut. Camilla Rivano and Gabriela Cecchini finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth place after three rounds of fencing. Both were victorious in 11 bouts, but Rivano finished with a +19 indicator while Cecchini finished with a +11 indicator.
Emma von Dadelszen ended the day with 11 victories, placing her in fourth. This is her highest opening day finish at the NCAA Championships of her career. Alexanne Verret, another fencer who made her first championship appearance, finished the day with six victories and in 15th place. The unit added 17 points to the team total.
The sabre unit ended the day with 12 points. Sarah Merza finished the day in sixth place with 10 wins. In her championship debut, Maddalena Bosetti earned two victories, finishing 23rd for the day.
The women’s competition will conclude tomorrow with two more rounds starting at 9 a.m. and semi-final and final bouts beginning at 1 p.m.
The men’s competition will follow the same format, fencing three rounds on Saturday with the final two rounds, as well as the final bouts, being fenced on Sunday.
