Buckeyes four shots out of Top 10 as four golfers open with 73’s
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team opened the 54-hole Ron Moore Invitational Friday with a team score of 4-over 292 and sit in 15th place after 18 holes of action in Goodyear, Ariz. The Buckeyes are only four shots out of the Top 10 and San Diego leads the event after a blistering 11-under 277 on the par 72, 7,015-yard Palms Course at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
Four Buckeyes, senior co-captain Zach Sebert, sophomore Patrick Simard, and freshmen Bo Hoag and Brad Smith, all carded rounds of 1-over 73 to tie for 43rd. Simard, from Marbella, Spain, and Hoag, an Upper Arlington, Ohio native, had matching score of 35 on the front nine and 38 on the back. Smith, from Peru, Ind., shot 38-35 and leads the field with two eagles and par 5 scoring at 6-under. Grove City, Ohio, native Sebert carded a 37 on the front nine and a 36 on the back.
Two strokes back was senior co-captain Kyle Coconis, who fired a 3-over 75. Coconis, a native of Zanesville, Ohio, shot a 1-under 35 on the front nine, but fell back to a tie for 61st with a 40 on his second nine.
Ohio State is second in the field in par 5 scoring, averaging 4.45 shots and totaling 11-under on those holes Friday. Leading the tournament in par 5 scoring is San Diego at 14-under. The Buckeyes are 10th with 51 pars and also carded 14 birdies thru the first 18 holes.
In seperate individual competition, Ohio State had three golfers competing in a field of 24 individual golfers. Juniors Kevin Grabeman and Dan Rush each shot a 1-under 71 to tie for third in the individual standings. Freshman Tanner Murphy, in his first competitive round, sits a stroke back at 72 and tie for seventh. Following the second round Saturday, there will be a cut to 16.
The Ron Moore Invitational will continue Saturday with round two. The teams and individuals will go off Nos. 1 and 10 beginning at 7:30 a.m. (PT).
