%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-Freshman Laura Sommerville (Algonquin, Ill.) and senior Earnest Nelson (Rowlett, Texas) won the intersquad Mixed Pairs Championships title this afternoon in St. John Arena. The duo won the competition win an overall score of 53.80.%^$

%^$ The competition began with 12 teams, which was then cut to eight after the first rotation. Then to four teams following the second rotation. In the third rotation Nelson and Sommerville surpassed the team of Mitch Claman (Sr., La Palma, Calif.) and Mary Beth Doerr (Sr., Boston Heights, Ohio) as Nelson scored an 8.3 on the high bars while Sommerville scored a 9.45 on the balance beam.%^$

%^$ The other finalists were Cody Trobaugh (Fr., Crosby, Texas) and Jill Tucker (Sr., Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and the pair of Dick Huntwork (Jr., Pickerington, Ohio) and Amanda Allen (Sr., Birmingham, Mich.).%^$

%^$ Men’s gymnastics head coach Miles Avery said this was a good way to work out the little things and get prepared for the season.%^$

%^$ “It looked like it was early. We wanted to use this event to get the kinks out because we don’t compete for another month, and it did exactly that for us,” Avery said.%^$

%^$ Larry Cox, the women’s gymnastics head coach, said it looked like his team was far off from competition form, but he expected that in their first event.%^$

%^$ “Usually this competition is used to work out the little things and we did that. I was pleased to see all of our seniors make it to the finals and a freshman help to win the competition,” Cox said.%^$
