COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing team wrapped up the first day of competition at the annual OSU Duals Saturday afternoon with a flawless 6-0 combined record for the men’s and women’s squads.
The two teams faced off against Cal Tech in the first round with the women taking their match, 19-7, while the men cruised to a 27-0 victory. The Buckeyes then took on the Cleveland State Vikings in the second round. The Scarlet and Gray women proved victorious, 25-2. The men defeated the Vikings, 21-6, behind a strong effort by the sabre unit, who finished with an 8-1 tally.
The epee squads provided the difference for both the men and women in the third-round bout against Johns Hopkins. Both epee units took their matches, 8-1, to power the men to a 19-8 victory and the women to an 18-9 decision.
Emily Cheng led the way for women’s sabre, taking four bouts, while Allison Henvick claimed nine victories in foil competition. Freshmen Mallory Norman and Laura Gurnowski tied with eight wins in epee.
Freshman Ewan Douglas picked up eight wins in men’s sabre. Classmate Chris Williams set the pace for the foil unit, tallying eight victories. Eric Gurnowski, Igor Tolkachev and Daniel Tafoya shared the lead in men’s epee with four wins apiece.
The Buckeyes will continue the event Sunday with 10 rounds of team competition throughout the day. The first bouts begin at 8 a.m. at the French Field House.
