COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team (6-5; 0-2 Big Ten) defeated the Ohio Bobcats (3-10; 1-2 MAC), 2-1, Tuesday at Pruitt Field in Athens, Ohio. A pair of sophomores in Lauren Kruse and Curlyne Wynn recorded the two Buckeye goals.
In the first 35 minutes of action, OSU jumped to an early lead, putting the first point on the scoreboard at the 33:14 mark. Shooting from the baseline, Wynn (So., Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago/North Eastern College) was credited with the unassisted goal. The Buckeyes increased their lead when Saskia Mueller’s (So., Zurich, Switzerland/Gymnasium Unterstrass) long shot from outside the circle was deflected over the goalie’s head into the net by Kruse (So., Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) at 26:06. The Bobcats’ Erica Bundalo answered with a goal off of a penalty corner tip at the end of the half.
In the second half, Ohio State nearly took a 3-1 lead when the Scarlet and Gray were awarded a penalty stroke halfway through the stanza. Sophomore Florencia Stier (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Washington) took the shot, but fired the ball just wide of the goal. The Buckeye defense continued to stifle the Bobcat offense, securing the 2-1 victory.
OSU goalkeeper Lindsay Williams (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) registered three saves and OU goalie Jennifer Cote had eight. The Buckeyes compiled 19 shots and two penalty corners, while the Bobcats recorded 19 shots and 12 penalty corners.
Ohio State plays two more games on the road before it returns to North Turf Field for its season home finale against Northwestern Oct. 16. The Buckeyes face the Iowa Hawkeyes at 11 a.m. Saturday and the Pacific Tigers at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Grant Field.
