COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State field hockey team (7-8, 2-3 Big Ten) defeated Iowa in double overtime (9-6, 2-3), 1-0, Sunday at Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa. Mariana Solorzano (Jr., Caracas, Venezuela/Humboldt School) scored the game-winning goal off a penalty corner 6:13 into double overtime.

Ohio State and Iowa were tied at 0-0 at the end of regulation game, forcing the game into a sudden victory overtime. The Hawkeyes kept the ball almost exclusively on their side of the field during the first overtime. But, OSU’s defense and goalkeeper, Lara Koole (Fr., Breukelen, Netherlands/RSG Broklede), rebuffed each of Iowa’s chances. The game ended in the second extra frame, when Solorzano scored on a penalty corner, Cammie Trainer (So., Hudson, Ohio and Jenee Doto (Jr., Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) picking up the assists.

The Hawkeyes controlled the first half, firing 10 shots and five penalty corners to Ohio State’s three shots and three penalty corners. Koole was up to the challenge and kept the Hawkeyes off the boards.

In the second half, OSU attacked with six shots and seven penalty corners. But, Iowa’s keeper Barb Weinberg stopped the Buckeyes every time.

Individually, Solorzano led the team with one goal and six shots. Lucy Clayton (So., Scarborough, England/Scarborough College) tallied four shots.

Buckeye goalkeeper Koole tallied nine saves while Iowa’s goalkeeper Weinberg recorded six saves.

Ohio State returns home to face Big Ten rival Michigan State at noon Saturday at the North Turf Field in Columbus. The game marks the Buckeyes’ last regular season play. Ohio State plays host to the 2002 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament Nov. 8-10 in Columbus.
