GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (4-3-0 overall; 4-3-0 WCHA) fell 5-4 in overtime to North Dakota Friday (2-5-0; 2-5-0 WCHA) night at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.

Ohio State and North Dakota match-up for game-two of series at 8:05 p.m. Saturday at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

North Dakota got on the scoreboard first as Cara Wooster scored at 12:11 for the Fighting Sioux. Ohio State followed with a goal one minutes later, when freshman Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill.) her scored an unassisted goal at 13:25. The goal marked Chesson’s first score as a Buckeye. The Fighting Sioux posted eight shots to the Buckeyes three.

The second period was another back and forth battle between the teams. The Fighting Sioux again scored the first goal of the period as Liz Funk recorded an unassisted goal at 6:44. Ohio State senior assistant captain Jeni Creary (Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) followed less than two minutes later with an even strength goal to tie the game. Senior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Sylvania, Ohio) and sophomore Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario) assisted on the goal. North Dakota ended the period with its third goal of the goal by Funk at 18:54. In the second stanza, UND outshot OSU 17 to nine.

Ohio State came out strong in the third period. The Buckeyes tied the game at 3-all at 1:09. Senior Jennifer Desson (Niagara Falls, Ontario) scored her first goal of the season on a pass in front of the net by junior Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario). The Buckeyes clinched the lead as junior Crystal Sayther (Burnsville, Minn.) scored a backhanded goal on a rebound from Mulvaney at 6:42. North Dakota pulled its goalie and came back to tie the game at 19:26, on a extra-man goal by Jessica Kovacevich. Thirty-seven seconds into the overtime period, North Dakota’s Funk scored the game-winning goal to record her first career hat trick.

Ohio State goalie Melissa Glaser (Rockford, Ill.) tallied 28 saves in 60:35 minutes in net. North Dakota’s goalie Amber Hasbargen recorded 16 saves in 60:26 minutes.

The Fighting Sioux tallied 33 shots to the Buckeyes’ 20. Ohio State was 1-for-8 on the power play and held North Dakota scoreless on nine of 11 power-play chances.
