COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team fell to No. 10 Michigan in Ann Arbor Friday night, 138-99 in an unconventional meet line-up. The women competed in 50-yard distances of events, rather than the traditional 100- or 200-yard lengths. The Buckeyes won three events, sweeping the first three places on the 3-meter springboard.

Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) picked up Ohio State’s first win in the second event of the night. Buelens cruised ahead of competition in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing seven seconds ahead of the next swimmer in 10:04.55. Jill Lockhart (Fr., Munice, Ind./Yorktown) touched in third in the 200-yard freestyle with 1:55.68.

Ohio State had an exceptional night on the boards. Julie Broms (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind/North Central) claimed her second consecutive win on the 3-meter for the season with a score of 296.70. Anesa Beard (Sr., Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) and Chelsea Davis (So., Columbus, Ohio/Graham School) filled the next two spots with the respective scores of 282.37 and 276.37. Davis and Broms also captured the respective places of second and third on the 1-meter springboard.

In the first sprint event of the night, Linda Lund (Jr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) finished third in the 50-yard butterfly (26.44). Stepping up to the blocks again, Buelens swam to a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (52.87). Stasia von Rahl (So., Mishawka, Ind./St.Joesph’s) took fifth-place with a season-best time of 54.44 in the event. Elaine Chan (So., Hong Kong, China/Heep Yunn) picked up another bronze medal for the team in the 50-yard backstroke (27.89).

The women had a successful 500-yard freestyle, going 2-3-4-5 in the event. Ohio State ended the meet with two wins. Erin Church (Jr., Morrow, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) stopped the clock at 30.72 for the win in the 50-yard breaststroke. The relay quad of Buelens, Lockhart, Annie Rennebohm (Jr., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and von Rahl were responsible for the win in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

“We didn’t show up tonight,” Jeanne Fleck, head swimming coach, said. “We have to do better. We were not ready to race – we were not ready to get up against one of the best teams. We have a lot of work to do on the little things and we are going to get it done.”
