Buckeyes need to finish in top 8 to advance to the national championships
STANFORD, Calif. – The fourth-seeded Ohio State women’s golf team is four shots back from advancing to the NCAA championships, sitting in 13th place at the NCAA West Regional with a 36-hole total of 603 (+35). The Buckeyes dropped five spots Friday after a second-round score of 23-over 307 on the par 71, 6,115-yard Stanford Golf Course.
Teeing off in the afternoon Friday, Ohio State had a tough time out of the gates and was 18-over after nine holes. The Buckeyes settled down after the turn was were just 5-over after that while collecting five birdies. Conditions were slightly windy with sunny skies and temperatures that started in the mid-70s, but fell as the sun faded.
Arizona leads the 24-team field with a two-round sum of 585 (+17), sitting three strokes ahead of top-seeded UCLA. Just seven strokes separate the teams between third and 12th place – Alabama in third (595), Virginia in fourth (596), California, LSU and Texas tied for fifth (597), Iowa State in eighth (599), Stanford, Texas A&M and UNLV tied for ninth (601) and San Jose State in 12th (602).
Three Buckeyes carded rounds of 76 in freshmen Rachel Rohanna and Amy Meier and junior In Hong Lim. Rohanna had a relatively steady round with three bogeys on both the front and back nine. The Waynesburg, Pa., native regained a stroke on her final hole with a birdie on the par 4 No. 18 to tie for 28th at 150 (+8).
Lim, from Melbourne, Australia, struggled off the start and was 5-over through her first five holes but righted the ship with a birdie on hole 7. After back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11, she made par on six of her last seven holes along with a birdie on the par 3 No. 17. Lim is tied for 39th with a total of 151.
After a difficult opening round of 84, Meier came back by shaving off nine strokes in round two. Along with four bogeys, the Rochester Hills, Mich., product’s only big hiccup came with a double-bogey on No. 6, but she also added a birdie on the par 5 hole 12. Meier is now tied for 97th at 160.
Rounding out the Buckeye lineup are junior Vicky Villanueva and Emma Jandel. Villanueva carded a 79 and is tied for 28th with Rohanna, while Jandel shot an 83 and is tied for 92nd with a sum of 159.
The NCAA West Regional concludes with a final round Saturday and Ohio State will begin teeing off at 12:30 p.m. (PT). The top 8 teams after 54 holes will advance to the NCAA championship May 18-21 in Wilmington, N.C. Live scoring for all three regionals is available on www.golfstat.com.
