COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 21 Ohio State field hockey team fell, 3-0, against No. 7 Penn State on a windy and chilly Friday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field. The Nittany Lions (13-3, 4-1 Big Ten) took a 2-0 lead heading into halftime and added one goal in the second half en route to the victory against the Buckeyes (9-7, 1-4 Big Ten).
The Nittany Lions scored all three goals on corners, outshooting Ohio State, 21-8, while collecting a 12-5 lead in penalty corners.
In the first half, Penn State struck first at 6:28 when Kelsey Amy scored from the top right of the circle following a pass by Whitney Reddig. The Nittany Lions then extended their lead to 2-0 after Brittany Grzywacz found the back of the cage following a corner with assists from Laura Gebhart and Reddig.
The best scoring opportunity for the Scarlet and Gray in the first half came during the 28th minute when Deckard and Queralt both posted shots on goals. However, PSU goalkeeper Ayla Halus denied the first shot, while Queralt’s shot was stopped on a defensive save by Brittany Grzywacz.
The wind and rain then picked up in the second half as the temperature dropped 10 degrees in the Columbus area. Ohio State began the half with back-to-back corners, but could not find the back of the net.
Penn State then claimed a 3-0 lead at 49:14 when Amy tallied her second goal of the game on a PSU corner from the left side of the circle into the back right post of the cage.
Junior goalkeeper Emma Voelker fell to 9-7 overall, collecting six saves – one shy of her season high.
In the final home game of the season, Ohio State honored seniors Paula Pastor-Pitarque, Laura Napolitano, Danica Deckard and Berta Queralt before the start of the contest as part of Senior Day. The 2012 senior class have collected 42 wins, 235 combined starts, seven Academic All-Big Ten selections and 11 OSU Scholar Athlete awards. The class was a part of the 2010 Big Ten Champion and NCAA Final Four Team, advancing to the NCAA Tournament three-consecutive seasons (program-record).
Ohio State will now prepare to conclude the regular season at Louisville Oct. 22 before traveling to Indiana Oct. 27.
