COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team edged Bemidji State, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at John S. Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn. With the win, the Buckeyes earned their first sweep over Bemidji State in Bemidji, Minn. Sophomore Amber Bowman scored the game-winning goal and posted an assist, while senior Meaghan Mulvaney scored two goals to lead the Buckeyes. With their sweep, the Buckeyes improve to 14-12-2 overall and 11-12-1 in the WCHA. Bemidji State falls to 6-10-2 and 2-19-2 in the WCHA.
Ohio State takes on No. 4 Wisconsin at 8:05 p.m. EST Feb. 11-12 at Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The game Feb. 11 will be televised live nationally on College Sports Television (CSTV).
In the first period, Bemidji State got on the scoreboard first with an even strength goal by Jenny Schnickel at 3:12. Both teams posted nine shots each in the first stanza.
Ohio State repeated its second period performance from game one scoring three goals to take a 3-1 advantage into the third stanza. Junior forward Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario) got the Buckeyes on the scoreboard with a goal at 7:06. Freshman Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis.) and senior Jeni Creary (Sr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) assisted on the goal. OSU took the led when senior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Sylvania, Ohio) blocked a BSU shot from the blueline and skated up the ice for an unassisted goal at 8:51. Mulvaney skated up the entire sheet of ice to score her second goal of the season and the Buckeyes’ third goal of the game at 18:06. Sophomore Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario) assisted on the goal by passing the puck to Mulvaney in OSU’s defensive zone. Bemidji State outshot Ohio State 12 to 14 in the second stanza.
Bemidji State came out strong scoring two goals in the first five minutes of the third period. Carly Napier and Nikki Eckebrecht scored for the Beavers at 4:17 and 5:22, respectively. Ohio State took a 4-3 lead, and the eventual gamewinner, as Bowman stole the puck from a BSU player near center ice for her fourth goal of the season at 15:59. Bemidji State pulled its goalie with 1:16 remaining in the game.
Ohio State senior goalie Melissa Glaser (Rockford, Ill.) recorded 30 saves in the full 60 minutes of action. Jill Luebke and Emily Brookshaw split time in net for Bemidji State. Luebke posted 18 saves in 38:06 minutes, while Brookshaw had 11 in the final 20:38 minutes.
Bemidji State and the Buckeyes posted 33 shots each. Ohio State held Bemidji State scoreless on all four the power plays, while the Buckeyes were unable to convert on three power-play chances.
With her goal, Jana Harrigan extended her point streak to 12 games this season. During her stretch Harrigan has posted five goals and 13 assists for 18 points. Harrigan recorded her 100th career points Friday and 101 point Saturday to move up to second in the OSU record books with 101 career points, one point ahead of former Buckeye Emma Laaksonen (2001-04).
Sophomore Amber Bowman lead the Buckeyes in the sweep over Bemidji State with four points (1-3-4) on the weekend.
Ohio State’s penalty-killing unit held Bemidji State scoreless on all seven power-play opportunities in the series.
