COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite claiming the doubles point with a pair of wins against ranked doubles pairs, the No. 51-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team (10-5, 1-1 B1G) dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 15-ranked Michigan Friday afternoon in Ann Arbor, Mich. The loss snaps a seven-match win streak for the Buckeyes and marks the first loss for the squad in B1G competition.
The Scarlet and Gray notched a pair of wins over ranked Michigan tandems to clinch the doubles point. On court one, the Buckeye duo of Noelle Malley and Grainne O’Neill defeated No. 18-ranked Brooke Bolender and Emina Bektas, 8-5. The freshman tandem of Ferny Angeles Paz and Miho Kowase secured the doubles point with a tiebreaker victory vs. No.75-ranked Sarah Lee and Amy Zhu, 8-7 (5), on court two. Kelsey Becker and Sandy Niehaus who were tied at 7-all vs. Ronit Yurovsky and Laura Ucros did not complete play.
Niehaus extended her win streak to 13-straight singles matches with a straight set victory vs. No.103-ranked Sarah Lee on court four, 6-3, 6-3. The win marks her first career win vs. a ranked opponent.
In a singles competition featuring two ranked opponents, No.112-ranked De Santis fell to No. 2-ranked Yurovsky, 6-1, 6-3, on court two. At the No. 1 position, Miho Kowase was defeated by No. 7-ranked Bektas, 6-1, 6-1, while Ferny Angeles Paz snapped a seven-match winning streak with a loss to No.98-ranked Bolender, 6-2, 6-0. Zhu secured the Michigan victory with a 6-0, 6-4, victory vs. O’Neill on court five. Malley fell to Ucros, 6-0, 6-2.
Up next, the Buckeyes will host B1G opponent Michigan State Sunday at noon in the Varsity Tennis Center.
