COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team (7-17-0, 3-16-0 WCHA) fell 2-1 to St. Cloud State University (12-8-2, 8-8-2 WCHA) on Saturday evening at the OSU Ice Rink. Similar to the previous night’s game, Ohio State had a late third period power play but was unable to convert the opportunity into an equalizing goal.

After the first period of play, the Buckeyes pulled ahead in shots, 13-9. A penalty drawn late in the first period by Ohio State forward Julia McKinnon carried over into the second period, allowing St. Cloud State to net a power play goal. Scored by Molly Illikainen, the goal came 0:40 into the second period with help from Lexi Slattery and Julia Tylke.

Ohio State changed the momentum shortly afterwards when sophomore forward Lauren Spring deposited a rebound shot past SCSU goaltender Katie Fitzgerald. Spring’s fifth goal of the season was assisted by teammates Cara Zubko and Maggie Rothgery.

The St. Cloud State Huskies finished the period off with a go-ahead goal at 19:46, scored by Julia Tylke. Tylke found an opening after being fed by fellow Huskies Brittney Anderson and Alyssa Erickson.

Buckeye goaltender Alex LaMere was tested in the third period, making key stops to keep the team within one goal of St. Cloud State. LaMere registered 37 saves in 59:00 of play, while SCSU’s Fitzgerald was credited with 17 saves.

Buckeyes look to bounce back next weekend with a series against Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. on Jan. 22-23.
