COLUMBUS, Ohio – In its first home contest of the season, the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team defeated St. Bonaventure 19-4 Sunday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 2-2 on the young season, while the Bonnies fall to 1-1.
Connecting with junior Alayna Markwordt, Ohio State junior Gabby Capuzzi was the first to score just 29 seconds in at 29:31. Gaining momentum, the Buckeye offense tallied 14 unanswered goals with seven different Buckeyes finding the back of the net.
Holding St. Bonaventure to just six shots in the first period, the Bonnies remained scoreless until Lauren Michaels, assisted by Christine Hanley, scored at 3:30. The Bonnies would strike again at 0:09, but it was not enough to catch the Buckeyes who sent St. Bonaventure to the lockerroom trailing 15-2.
The Buckeyes remained in control in the second period, opening with a 4-0 run through 11:58. The Bonnies would end the match with back-to-back goals by Amanda Cizenski.
Eight Buckeyes would score in all, led by senior Brittney Zerhusen who nabbed five goals and Capuzzi and Markwordt who notched three apiece. Adding four assists, Markwordt would lead the Buckeyes in points with seven.
Competitive in the circle, the Buckeyes held a 15-10 advantage in draw control. The Buckeyes also finished ahead in shots, 32-17, and in the groundball race, 16-13.
The Buckeyes will return to action in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium with back-to-back home matches March 5 and 7. Ohio State is set to take on Stanford Saturday at 1 p.m., before facing Canisius at 1 p.m. Monday.
