IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team dropped a four-set decision (25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23) on the road at Iowa on Saturday night. The Hawkeyes (17-12, 6-10 B1G) snapped their 15-match losing streak with the Buckeyes (14-13, 7-9 B1G) to pick up their first win of the series since 2008.
Luisa Schirmer finished the night with a match-high 18 kills on her way to a .385 attacking percentage. Ashley Wenz was just one kill shy of her career mark with 17 daggers. She paired it with seven digs and two block assists. Madison Smeathers was the third Buckeye in double digits with 10 kills.
Rookie Becca Mauer set new career highs thanks to 51 assists and five kills. Ana Beatriz Franklin posted 11 digs, six kills and a career-best three solo blocks. Hannah Gruensfelder chipped in a team-best 13 digs while Camry Halm dug seven balls.
SET 1: Wenz tallied eight kills on 14 error-free attempts in the opening set. The two teams tied things up six times before the Hawkeyes went up 13-11. Ohio State tried to keep the score close as they trailed 20-17 but Iowa pulled away for a 25-18 victory.
SET 2: The Buckeyes strung together five straight points to help them jump ahead, 17-9, in the second. The Hawkeyes responded with a 9-2 run of their own late to cut the deficit to 24-22. An attacking error on Iowa ended the set in OSU’s favor, 25-22.
SET 3: Starting the third stanza down four, the Scarlet & Gray used a 7-1 sprint to take 13-10 advantage and send Iowa to its bench. The Hawkeyes dug in to tie the score at 22-all and had the last three points for the win, 25-22.
SET 4: A kill by Wenz knotted the fourth frame at 14-14. Iowa put together four consecutive points for an 18-14 upper hand. The Buckeyes bounced back with four straight tallies of their own to tie the set at 21-all but the Hawkeyes held on for a 25-23 victory.
Ohio State returns to St. John Arena to host Nebraska on Friday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. ET.
