MANKATO, Minn. – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (2-0-0) defeated Minnesota State, Mankato (0-2-0), 3-1, Saturday in the second game of the two-game series at the All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn. OSU out dueled MSU in the two-game series. The Buckeyes lead the series 13-0-1 all-time.

“I am pleased with our team’s effort this weekend,” Jackie Barto, OSU head coach, said. “Going into a two-game series on the road is always tough but we managed to over come MSU’s home court advantage. I am especially pleased with the performance of our special teams.”

MSU came off the bench strong in the first period. Melanie Salatino scored the first goal of the game, 5:24 in the first period. Ohio State fought back getting several shots off. At the end of the first period, Emily Hudak (Sr., Marblehead, Mass/Cushing) and Emma Laaksonen (Jr., Espoo, Finland/Team Finland/Blues Espoo) set Jeni Creary (So., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame) up for an open shot into the right corner of the net. The goal was Creary’s second on the season.

The Buckeyes led the second period with 16 shots to the Mavericks seven shots. Creary recorded her second goal of the game late in the period (19:57) from an assistant by Laaksonen. OSU ended the second period up one.

The Mavericks had several power-play chances in the third period, but they were unable to score. Freshman Jana Harrigan (Fr., Burlington, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) scored Ohio State’s third goal of the game and her third career goal on a power play 7:24 in the period. Creary and Laaksonen assisted the goal. MSU pulled its goalie with 40 seconds to go in the third period.

Freshman Natalie Lamme (Fr., Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) played the full 60:00 in the net for the Buckeyes, recording 28 saves. Lamme started her first collegiate game in the net.

The Buckeyes were 2-for-5 on the power play. They shut out MSU on all eight of their power-play chances.

OSU finished the game with 32 shots and nine penalties. Mankato had 29 shots and six penalties.

Ohio State returns home to face New Hampshire at 7:05 p.m. Friday and 4:05 p.m. Saturday at the OSU Ice Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The two-game series marks OSU’s home opener.
