COLUMBUS, Ohio – After a short delay due to heavy rain in the Columbus area, the Ohio State field hockey team continued its preseason with a 4-3 victory over Indiana Saturday in an exhibition game at Buckeye Varsity Field.
Down 3-2, the Buckeyes scored two goals in the final 12 minutes of the game on their new turf field against their Big Ten opponent for the victory. Ohio State was led by 2009 Freshman of the Year Berta Queralt, who posted two assists and one goal for a team-best four points.
Junior Maria Briones tied the game after scoring on a penalty corner in the 24th minute with assists from Queralt and senior Aisling McKeon. Senior Jena Cacciatore gave the Buckeyes the victory in the 33rd minute after a pass from junior co-captain Aisling Coyle.
Coyle, who tallied three points, began the scoring for the Scarlet and Gray on a penalty corner in eighth minute of the first half.
“We showed character today having to come from behind for the win,” head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “We had good scoring opportunities and we will continue to work on becoming more balanced and organized as we prepare to begin the season.”
In the scrimmage, five Buckeyes had multi-point performances including Queralt, Coyle, Briones, Cacciatore and McKeon.
Ohio State now just has one more week of practice before opening the 2010 season at Ohio at 1 p.m. Aug. 31 in Athens. The grand opening of the new 500-seat Buckeye Varsity Field will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 in a non-conference game against Syracuse. A ceremony will be held prior to the game at 2:45 p.m. and Ohio State field hockey alumni are encouraged to attend.
