Senior Carling Coffing ties career-high finish with second place
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s golf team concluded its own Lady Buckeye Invitational in second place Sunday, its highest placing at the event since finishing second in 2004. Ohio State totaled 913 (300-303-310) on its home par 72, 6,228-yard Scarlet Course in Columbus to conclude the regular season. The Buckeyes topped seven other Big Ten teams in the 12-team field, including 16th-ranked Michigan State, in their final tournament before the conference championships next weekend.
No. 15 Kent State took the 2008 Lady Buckeye Invitational title with a team score of 885 (294-299-292). Medalist honors went to Sara Brown of Michigan State, who finished the event even par with a 216, edging Ohio State’s own Carling Coffing by two strokes.
Ohio State had five student-athletes place in the Top 25, led by Coffing in second place at 2-over 218 a career-best 54-hole score. After shooting a personal-best and Buckeye season-low score of 67 to open the tournament, the senior from Middletown, Ohio, had another solid performance for the final round as she made par on 15 holes and recorded one birdie en route to a score of 74. Coffing led the 72-player field in pars with 38.
Also on the Top 10 for the Buckeyes was junior Gemma Webster, who finished with a total of 227 (+11) to place seventh. The team captain from Glasgow, Scotland, closed out the event with a 78 in a round that included 12 pars and a birdie.
A pair Ohio State golfers, senior Haley Brown and junior Jessica Hauser, tied for 22nd at 236. Brown, of Austin, Texas, shot a 79 and Hauser, of Hartland, Wis., had an 80 during their rounds Sunday. Sophomore Emma Jandel, of Dayton, Ohio, also closed out with an 80 and tied for 25th with a total of 237.
After withdrawing from the second round yesterday, freshman In Hong Lim re-entered the tournament Sunday to shoot a 79 for the final 18 holes. She had a two-round total to 159.
Representing the Buckeyes individually were redshirt-freshman Gina Besozzi and junior Jennifer Cassidy. Besozzi finished the event tied for 46th (82-78-84244) while Cassidy moved up six places to finish tied for 60th (86-88-77251).
Ohio State next travels to University Park, Pa., to compete in the Big Ten Championships, hosted by Penn State, April 25-27.
