COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team completed the series sweep over Minnesota State with a 4-2 victory Saturday afternoon at All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn. Buckeye senior Jeni Creary recorded two goals in the third period to improve OSU’s record to 3-1-0 overall and in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Mavericks fall to 0-2-0 overall and in the WCHA.

“The team showed a lot of character in the game today,” Jackie Barto, Ohio State head coach, said. “They stuck to the game plan and got the job down in the third period. Our special teams, the power-play and penalty-killing units, came up big in the game.”

Ohio State scored the first goal of the game at the 15:51 mark in the first period. OSU junior Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario) scored her first goal of the season on a power-play assisted by sophomore Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario). The Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks eight to six in the first stanza.

Minnesota State came out strong in the second period. MSU’s Shera Vis scored the lone goal of the second period at 11:19 assisted by Kerri Wallace. At the end of the second stanza, OSU and MSU were tied at 1-all on the scoreboard.

In the third period, Minnesota State claimed a 2-1 lead early, as Melanie Salatino scored a power-play goal at 5:55. Following the MSU goal, Ohio State picked up its speed and momentum as the Buckeyes tied the game up less than two minutes later. Sophomore Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario) scored her first goal of the season on the power-play at 7:12. Buckeye senior Jeni Creary (Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) secured OSU’s victory with two goals. Her first came at 9:10 scoring an unassisted even-strength goal. Creary scored her second goal of the game at 18:22, assisted by Harrigan and Bonhomme.

OSU sophomore goalie Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario) played the full 60 minutes in net recording 23 saves on 25 shots. MSU goalie Brittni Kehler played 59:11 in net, posting 17 saves on 21 shots.

The Buckeyes took 21 shots to the Mavericks 25. Ohio State held Minnesota State scoreless on six-of-seven power-play chances. OSU improved its power-play as the Buckeyes scored on three-of-nine power-play opportunities, including two-of-three in the third period.

Ohio State returns home to face WCHA rival No. 4 Wisconsin at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio.
