COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team fell to No. 1 Minnesota, 6-0, Saturday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. With the loss the Buckeyes fall to 14-11-3 overall and 10-10-2 in the WCHA, while the Golden Gophers improve to 22-4-2 overall and 15-3-2 in WCHA action.

In the opening period, Ohio State held Minnesota scoreless despite being outshot 9-4. The Buckeyes stopped the Golden Gophers on their first power-play of the evening.

Minnesota came out strong in the second period, as the Golden Gophers took a 3-0 lead. Minnesota scored the first goal of the game at 4:59, as Natalie Darwitz scored a 4-on-4 breakaway goal. Krissy Wendell tallied Minnnesota’s second goal on a power-play at 10:03. Senior La Toya Clarke recorded a goal at 15:00 to end the second stanza.

The Buckeyes outshot Minnesota 12-11 in the third period, but were held scoreless. The Gophers tallied three additional goals in the period, two of which came off the stick of Darwitz. The sophomore scored a shorthanded unassisted goal at 2:24 and following five minutes later with a power-play goal. Junior Noelle Sutton posted Minnesota’s second shorthanded goal of the game at 13:37.

Ohio State freshman goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario) posted a season-high 37 saves, which tied senior goaltender Melissa Glaser’s (Rockford, Ill.) mark set Jan. 3 vs. St. Cloud State. Minnesota goalie Brenda Reinen earned the shutout as she stopped all 19 Buckeye chances.

Ohio State’s penalty-killing unit held Minnesota on 2-of-4 power plays. OSU was scoreless on its all four power-play opportunities. The Golden Gophers outshot the Buckeyes 43-19 in the game. Ohio State plays host to WCHA rival Wisconsin at 7:05 p.m. Feb. 27-28 at the OSU Ice Rink. Prior to the game Feb. 28, the Buckeyes will pay tribute to the 2004 senior class.
