Columbus, Ohio—Ohio State defeated Ashland University on 88-79 in an exhibition game to kick off its 2016-17 campaign on Sunday afternoon at Value City Arena.
Five players reached double figures in scoring for the Scarlet and Gray, led by Shayla Cooper and her 20 points. The senior was 7-of-10 from the field, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Both teams fought for the lead early on, but a 15-2 run by the Buckeyes that extended into the second quarter helped them take a commanding lead they would not relinquish. Ashland did mount a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter; the Eagles rattled off a 16-7 run that cut their deficit to single digits, but that’s as close as they would get.
In addition to Cooper Ohio State had Stephanie Mavunga (18), Kiara Lewis (12), Sierra Calhoun (12), and Kelsey Mitchell (11) reach double figures in scoring. The Eagles’ Andi Daugherty led all scorers with 25 points, while Laina Snyder recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Defensively, Ohio State forced 19 turnovers and was able to generate 20 points off those plays. The Buckeyes shot 48 percent from the field, compared to Ashland’s 41 percent. Even better, OSU held the Eagles to 32 percent shooting in the second half.
