Highlights from the past week in Ohio State Athletics

Athletes of the Week

Valeria Leon, Women’s volleyball

  • Leon had 14 digs in a three-set victory over No. 11 Michigan State on Saturday night while becoming Ohio State’s all-time career leader in digs with 1,573. Leon now has totaled 1,586 digs in her four-year career as a Buckeye.

Nate Kohl, Men’s soccer

  • Kohl buried a shot from the right side of the box to the far side post to beat Michigan in double overtime on Friday evening. Kohl, who transferred to Ohio State from Michigan, gave the Buckeyes a much need road victory to pull their conference record to 3-3-1.

No. 19 Men’s Ice Hockey (3-0-2)

  • Ohio State picked up two solid wins this weekend over Bowling Green on the ice.
  • On Friday night, the Buckeyes picked up a tough road win in the 5-4 victory. Ohio State had 11 different skaters register a point in the game.
  • Saturday’s win proved to be a little more dominant with a 6-1 victory. Nick Schilkey scored a goal in the first and third periods to lead the way for the Buckeyes.
  • Ohio State is undefeated through its first five contests for the first time since 1983-84.

No. 19 Women’s Volleyball (14-8, 4-6 Big Ten)

  • The Buckeyes knocked off No. 11 Michigan State Saturday evening in straight sets.
  • Luisa Schirmer led the team with 13 kills while hitting .417. Taylor Sandbothe tallied a .450 attacking percentage on 12 kills and Audra Appold had 10 kills to go along with seven digs.

Women’s Soccer (10-5-3, 4-3-3 Big Ten)

  • The Buckeyes thwarted Michigan Saturday by a tally of 2-1 behind goals from Sammy Edwards and Nichelle Prince.
  • Prince’s goal moves here into a tie for eighth all-time in program history with 27 career goals.
  • The Buckeyes are now 9-1-1 in games this fall when they score two or more goals.

Field Hockey (6-10, 1-6 Big Ten)

  • Esther Clotet Alsina netted her seventh goal of the season on Friday to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 victory at Indiana.
  • Goalie Liz Tamburro racked up three saves to register her third shutout of the season.
  • When Clotet Alsina scores a goal, the Scarlet and Gray are 5-2 on the season.

Men’s Soccer (5-10-1, 3-3-1 Big Ten)

  • Nate Kohl scored the game-winning goal with 23 seconds remaining in double overtime on Friday evening to secure a 1-0 victory over Michigan.
  • Goalkeeper Parker Siegried made two saves on the night, both coming in double overtime; this was his third shutout of the season.
  • This was the first win on the road for the Scarlet and Gray this fall.
