COLUMBUS, Ohio – After Day 1 of a two-day dual meet at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, the Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team trails the Penn State Nittany Lions 93-74. The meet will conclude Saturday at noon. Admission is free.
The Buckeyes picked up four wins on the day, including wins in both the 400-medley and 400-freestyle relays to open and close the meet, respectively. Freshman Megan Detro and sophomore diver Bianca Alvarez were also victorious in individual events.
Head coach Bill Dorenkott anticipated the tough competition.
“We knew it was going to be a tough meet coming in,” Dorenkott said. “We got touched out at the wall on a couple races, but the good part is, we’re faster than we were the week before. You can’t be disappointed with that. Penn State is swimming well, and we’re looking forward to some more racing tomorrow.”
Ohio State kicked the meet off with a 400 medley relay composed of junior Samantha Cheverton, sophomore Catherine Eitel, freshman Shannon Draves and Detro winning in a time of 3:44.71.
Detro later followed with her win in the 50 freestyle, clocking in at 23.27.
Meanwhile, Alvarez placed first on the one-meter springboard, accumulating a winning total of 317.60 total points.
Cheverton, junior Anita Beck, Detro and and Lisa Narum closed the evening with the win in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:22.81.
