COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs 10-7 Sunday to win the 1999 Columbus Regional before 3,242 at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes now play Cal State Fullerton in the Super Regional June 4-6 at a site to be determined.
Mississippi State got on the board first, scoring once in its half of the second inning. With one out, Chris Curry was hit by a pitch. Jon Knott then hit a check swing comebacker to Buckeye starter Andy Lee who attempted to get Curry at second but instead threw the ball into centerfield, putting runners on the corners. After Josh West struck out, Chris Lotterhos lined a double just inside the left field line to score Curry. After two innings, MSU led 1-0.
In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs added another run when Travis Chapman belted his 10th home run of the year, a solo shot that made the score 2-0, MSU.
But the Buckeyes bounced back in the top of the fourth for five runs. After Mike Lockwood was retired to begin the inning, Tom Durant picked up OSUs first hit of the afternoon when he blooped a single into centerfield. Jason Trott and Chad Ehrnsberger then walked back-to-back to lead the bases. Jason Turner then struck out for the second out of the inning. But Jason Driscoll walked on four pitches, forcing home Durant. That set the table for Matt Middleton, who worked the count in his favor and blasted a grand slam over the wall in right field to make the score 5-2.
The sixth inning saw OSU tack on one more. A double by Trent McIlvain got the Buckeyes started, and Tom Durants double two batters later knocked him in to make the score 6-2, Ohio State.
Mississippi State cut the lead to 6-3 in the home half of the fifth when Ty Martin slammed his seventh home run of the year.
OSU built that lead back in its half of the sixth. Jason Turner led off with a single. Jason Driscoll then dumped a double into left centerfield, advancing Turner to third. Matt Middleton was the next hitter, and he came up big again, lining a single into centerfield to score Turner. The RBI was Middletons fifth of the day, tying a school record for RBI in an NCAA Tournament game. Joe Wilkins followed Middleton with a single, scoring Driscoll. On the throw to the plate, Wilkins advanced to second base, putting runners on second and third. One out later with the infield drawn in, Mike Lockwood singled up the middle to score both Middleton and Wilkins, increasing the Buckeye lead to 10-3. The Bulldogs began to make a run in the bottom of the seventh. Martin led off the inning with a single, which was followed by a Brian Wiese walk. Cliff Wren then singled to load the bases. A Chapman sacrifice fly brough home Martin and a Jamie Rock single scored Wiese to make the score 10-5, Buckeyes.
Mississippi State kept chipping away in the eighth. West walked to lead off the inning. One out later, Martin and Wiese singled back-to-back, the second of which plated West to make it 10-6. With two outs, Chapman doubled to drive in Martin to make the score 10-7.
Andy Lee pitched 6.1 innings to earn his ninth victory of the season. Kurt Fullenkamp wrapped things up for the Buckeyes to earn the save, the first of his career. Nate Smith also added 1.1 innings of solid relief.
