COLUMBUS, Ohio-Jim O’Brien, Ohio State men’s basketball coach, placed senior Shaun Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) on scholarship for his final season of eligibility with the Buckeyes.

Smith, a 5-foot-10-inch guard, is in his fifth season at Ohio State. He did not play basketball during his first season in Columbus in 1999-00. O’Brien added the family resource management major to the squad following walk-on tryouts in the fall of 2000.

O’Brien said Smith deserves the opportunity to participate as a scholarship member of the 2003-04 Buckeye roster.

“Shaun has been a significant part of our program the last three years,” O’Brien said. “He has worked extremely hard, has done everything we’ve asked and has been a good teammate. His efforts in the classroom and dedication to the program made the decision to grant him a scholarship, an easy one.”

In the last three seasons, Smith, who was awarded the John Havlicek Award as the team’s most inspiration player each of the last two years, has appeared in 35 games for the Buckeyes.
