Non-Conference Action Concludes at Flyer Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (8-1) is headed an hour west on I-70 to wrap up its non-conference slate at the Flyer Invitational Sept. 14-15. The Buckeyes are set to face Evansville Friday at 3 p.m. before participating in a pair of matches Saturday against Tennessee and Dayton at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 14

Ohio State vs. Evansville | 3 p.m.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 15

Ohio State vs. Tennessee | 10:30 a.m.

Ohio State at Dayton | 7 p.m.

SCOUTING REPORT

Friday’s outing versus Evansville will be the second meeting between the programs. The inaugural match was back in 2001, where the Buckeyes secured a 3-0 win. The Purple Aces are 6-4 so far this season and has lost two of their last three matches.

Ohio State owns a spotless 8-0 mark in its series with Tennessee. The teams last faced off in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes advanced to the ‘Sweet 16’ that year after defeating the Lady Vols in a five-set thriller. Tennessee has a 7-2 record with wins against a pair of Top 25 opponents.

The Buckeyes have won their last six matches against Dayton and own a 13-9 lead in the series. Ohio State hosted the Flyers a season ago at the Buckeye Invitational and earned a three-set victory. This season, Dayton is 6-4 overall and has a 4-0 mark at home.

B1G ACCOLADES

Sophomore defensive specialist Hannah Gruensfelder was selected as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Gruensfelder reached double figures in digs in every match during Ohio State’s 3-0 run at the Towson Invitational. The Weldon Springs, Mo. native successfully handled 48 error-free service receptions and averaged 6.70 digs per set over the weekend.

LAST TIME OUT

Ohio State moved to 8-1 on the season after picking up three wins at the Towson Invitational last weekend. The Buckeyes took down Missouri in four sets and swept Princeton and Towson. The victories extended the squad’s win streak to four matches.

WITTE – HOT HITTING

Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Witte has been the leader on offense for the Buckeyes over the first three weeks of the season. She currently tops the team and ranks 17th nationally with a .423 hitting percentage. Witte also protects the net with 1.06 blocks per set.

FAREWELL ST. JOHN ARENA, HELLO COVELLI CENTER

The 2018 campaign is the final season for the Buckeyes inside St. John Arena. The women’s volleyball team will be moving to the Covelli Center, which is set to be complete in time for the 2019 season. The state-of-the-art facility is part of the new Ohio State Athletic District and will span over 100,000 square feet in total and include a locker room and coaching suite designed specifically for the women’s volleyball program.
