COLUMBUS, Ohio – The ninth-ranked Ohio State women’s hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with WCHA foe Minnesota State Friday at the OSU Ice Rink. The Mavericks scored with 1:06 remaining in the third on an extra-skater goal by Felicity Nelson to salvage the tie. Nelson and Hayley Klassen of the Buckeyes each scored two goals for their teams. Ohio State is now 4-2-1 (2-2-1 WCHA) while Minnesota State moves to 3-2-1 (2-1-1 WCHA).
After skating to a scoreless first period in which the Buckeyes outshot MSU 9-7, Ohio State got on the board 8:06 into the second. Klassen (Warman, Saskatchewan/College of Notre Dame) put the Buckeyes up 1-0 with her second goal of the season when she knocked the puck past MSU goaltender Laura Brennan during a scramble in front of the net while on the power play. The freshman was assisted by sophomores Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario/Windsor Wildcats) and Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill./Chicago Mission).
Just over four minutes later at 12:16, the Mavericks responded when Nelson scored a power play goal of her own to tie the game at 1-1. Klassen returned the lead to Ohio State at 18:51 when she scored her second goal of the game and third of the year. Aldous won a faceoff in the OSU zone and passed the puck to freshman Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/London Devilettes). Marziali then fed the puck off the boards to Klassen, who was skating up the side, picked it up and tucked it in to regain the lead at 2-1 heading into the second intermission. Aldous notched her second assist of the game and season on the goal, while Marziali also collected her second of the year.
Both teams had strong scoring opportunities in the third period, including a 5-on-3 chance for Minnesota State. With 1:12 remaining, the Mavericks took a time out and pulled Brennan for an extra skater. The move proved successful as MSU tied the game for the second time just six seconds later, sending the game into overtime. Junior goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) made three saves in the overtime period to maintain the tie.
For the game, the Buckeyes held a slight edge in shots at 26-23. Ohio State was 1-for-6 on the power play, while MSU was 1-for-8.
The Buckeyes and Mavericks will conclude their series with a 4:07 p.m. game Saturday. During the game, both teams are participating in WCHA Cares, Katrina Relief Drive sponsored by the conference. OSU and Minnesota State will be raffling off game-worn jerseys and accepting monetary donations to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
