COLUMBUS, Ohio – Buckeye sophomore Yesenia Luces had the gamewinning goal and two assists to lead the No. 9 Ohio State field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime win over Miami (Ohio) Wednesday in Oxford, Ohio. The win was the Buckeyes’ 10th in a row, tying the program record for consecutive victories first set in 1976. OSU now is 11-2 on the year (3-0 Big Ten), while the RedHawks drop to 5-6 (2-1 MAC).

“Miami came out strong and determined on their home field,” Buckeye head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “You have to be able to step up to that challenge and we were able to do that. We did a good job creating opportunities, although we had some difficulty finishing today.”

Senior Lucy Clayton (Scarborough, England) connected with Saskia Mueller (Jr., Zuerich, Switzerland) and Luces (So., Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) on two penalty corners in the first half to stake the Buckeyes to a 2-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the game. Ohio State’s first goal came at 11:25, as Clayton scored on a shot just inside the left post. At 17:24 Clayton added her second goal of the game and her team-best 11th of the season, again scoring off a penalty corner.

Miami cut the Buckeyes’ lead to one (2-1) with a goal at 21:28, set up by Christine Loyd and Jessica Saling. The Buckeyes outshot the RedHawks in the first half, 7-1.

There was no scoring in the second half until Miami’s Keri Von Kalinowski, assisted by Alyssa Nye, scored with just over five minutes remaining (64:40). The Buckeyes took 11 shots in the half, the RedHawks one.

Luces scored on the only shot of overtime, redirecting in a Linda Haussener (Fr., Baden, Switzerland) shot at 73:45.

For the game, the Buckeyes oushot the RedHawks, 19-2. OSU goalie Lindsay Williams (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa.) played all 73:45 in cage, recording no saves. Miami’s Kerri Orr had 10 saves. OSU had 11 penalty corners, MU three.

The Buckeyes take a five-day break from competition before opening a three-game homestand vs. Kent State at 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at North Turf Field. OSU then hosts Big Ten foe No. 7-ranked Indiana at 3 p.m. Oct. 14 and Central Michigan at noon Oct. 16.
