Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four Buckeye players scored goals to lead No. 9 Ohio State past Kent State, 4-2, Tuesday at North Turf Field. The win was the Buckeyes’ 11th in a row, breaking the all-time record of 10 set in 1976. OSU is now 12-2 on the year (3-0 Big Ten), while Kent State falls to 2-12 (2-2 MAC).

“If we play with the type of tempo that we did in the first half, then we’re going to be tough to beat,” Buckeye head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “We were really hustling and beating them to the ball. In the second half they really upped the pressure on us and we had to adjust. But this win is great for our kids. They have been so consistent all season and have really worked hard.”

Ohio State scored three goals in a span of less than four minutes to open up a 3-0 first-half lead. Buckeye sophomore Yesenia Luces (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph’s Convent) opened the scoring at 22:39 when she knocked in her 10th goal of the year off a loose ball in front of the cage. Less than two minutes later senior Lucy Clayton (Scarborough, England/Scarborough College) upped the lead to 2-0 with her 12th goal of the season, at 23:54, off an assist from junior Lauren Kruse (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills), her fourth of the year. Kruse dribbled right of the cage and passed to Clayton at the top of the circle where she scored into the left side of the cage.

The Buckeyes extended the lead to 3-0, when junior Curlyne Wynn (Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago/North Easton College) notched her fourth goal of the season at 26:17. Wynn knocked in the ball with an assist by Saskia Mueller (Zuerich, Switzerland/Gymnasium Unterstrass). Ohio State opened the second half scoring when Kruse scored her sixth goal of the year as she deflected the shot of Mueller to the back of the cage at 42:57. Kent State cut the Buckeye lead to 4-1, when Britt Van Pelt deflected a shot past senior Lindsay Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) at 61:51. It was the fourth goal of the year or Van Pelt, who was assisted by Charlotte Mueller. Less than four minutes later the Golden Flashes cut the deficit to 4-2, when Elizabeth Lahey scored an unassisted goal, her fifth of the season.

For the game, Ohio State outshot Kent State 20-3, including 13-1 in the first half. The Buckeyes took nine penalty corners to Kent State’s three.

Kent State split the time in goal between two keepers, with Linz Markwart saving six shots in the first half and Kara Copeland saving four shots in the second half. Buckeye goalkeeper Williams played all 70 minutes in cage and did not record a save.

The Buckeyes will go for their 12th win in a row when they return to Big Ten action to take on the Indiana Hoosiers at 3 p.m. Friday at North Turf Field.
