COLUMBUS, Ohio – The ninth-ranked Ohio State field hockey team scored three goals in each half to down Central Michigan 6-1 Sunday at North Turf Field. Senior Lucy Clayton (Scarborough, England/Scarborough College) led the Buckeye offense with a career-high four goals. Ohio State honored six players before the game for Senior Day as the Buckeyes finished their home schedule with a record of 9-2. With the victory, OSU completed a season sweep of MAC opponents (6-0), also defeating Missouri State, Ball State, Ohio, Miami and Kent State. Ohio State is now 13-3overall (3-1 Big Ten), while Central Michigan falls to 6-8 (3-3 MAC).
“We played a very balanced game today,” Buckeye head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “We were able to stretch the field and execute the opportunities given to us. We distributed the ball very well and did a great job on our penalty corners. It was a great win for us.”
Sophomore Yesenia Luces (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph’s Convent) opened the scoring at 1:06 with an unassisted goal scored off a loose ball rebound. It was Luces’ 11th goal of the season. Clayton then scored her first goal of the game and 13th of the season at 8:53 to put the Buckeyes up 2-0. Her shot came off a penalty corner assisted by Luces and junior Saskia Mueller (Zuerich, Switzerland/Gymnasium Unterstrass).
Central Michigan cut the Buckeye lead in half, 2-1, when Allyson Doan scored off a rebound at 25:23. Ohio State responded five minutes later when Clayton notched her second goal of the game at 30:36 by dribbling through three defenders and scoring from the right side to move the lead to 3-1.
The Buckeyes opened the second-half with a goal when senior Katelin Condon (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) scored her first goal of the season at 44:26. Senior Leticia Fragapane (Mendoza, Argentina/Universidad Nacional De Cuyo) had the assist, finding Condon alone in front of the cage where she shot it over Central Michigan goalkeeper Danielle Frank.
Less than two minutes later, Clayton scored her third goal of the game at 46:02, once again scoring off a penalty corner with assists by Luces and Muller. The goal marked the sixth time in her career that Clayton has scored three goals or more.
Clayton closed the scoring at 65:53 with her fourth of the game. She scored off a penalty corner for the third time in the game, assisted by Luces and Muller. It was Clayton’s 16th goal of the season. For the game, Luces finished with one goal and three assists and Mueller also had three assists.
Ohio State outshot the Chippewas 24-7, including 16-5 in the first half. The Buckeyes took 12 penalty corners to Central Michigan’s four.
Buckeye senior goalkeeper Lindsay Williams (Harrisburg Pa./Susquehanna Township) played 60 minutes with four saves. Junior Tory Krauss (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) played 10 minutes for Ohio State and did not record a save. Frank played all 70 minutes for the Chippewas and recorded eight saves.
The Buckeyes return to action when they travel to State College, Pa., to take on Penn State Oct. 22 at 12 p.m.
