COLUMBUS, Ohio – It wasn’t the prettiest game for three quarters for Ohio State but at the end of the night, the Buckeyes stars shined and led the team to a 95-63 victory over visiting Quinnipiac.
Kelsey Mitchell was 6-of-9 from long range and led all scorers with 32 points. Linnae Harper and Stephanie Mavunga both recorded their third double-double in the first four games. Harper scored a career-high 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with three assists and three steals. Mavunga posted totals of 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.
Quinnipiac falls to its third Power 5 conference team to open the year. The Bobcats were led offensively by Jen Fay and Aryn McClure who each posted 15 points.
The game was close for the first three quarters as the Buckeyes led just 65-53 at the end of the third. But a 55.6 percent shooting effort from Ohio State in the fourth compared to 12.5 percent for the Bobcats made the difference. The Buckeyes scored a season-high 30 points while holding Quinnipiac to an opponent-low 10 points.
The Bobcats made two early threes and raced to a 10-6 lead, forcing an OSU timeout not even three minutes into the game. But the Buckeyes answered with a 16-5 run and built a 28-18 advantage at the end of the first. The lead was 14 at the break and Quinnipiac took advantage of some sluggish play in the third quarter by the Buckeyes and outscored them 21-19 to knife the lead to just 12.
The fourth quarter however was all Buckeyes. A 13-0 run midway through the quarter helped remove any doubt. Outside of shooting 55 percent and making 3-of-5 three-point attempts, OSU outrebounded Quinnipiac 17-6.
The Buckeyes will complete their five-game home stand to open the season this Sunday when they host Pac 12 foe Washington. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.
