CINCINNATI, Ohio – The No. 9/10 Ohio State men’s hockey team was shut out by instate and Central Collegiate Hockey Association rival Miami, 1-0, Saturday at Cincinnati Gardens. The RedHawks scored the lone goal of the game less than a minute into the third period.

The loss ends OSU’s unbeaten streak at five and its winning streak at four. The team drops to 21-7-3 overall and 15-5-4 in league play. Miami improves to 17-13-2 and 11-11-2 in the CCHA. OSU won the season series against the RedHawks, 3-1-0, including a 4-1 victory Thursday in Oxford, Ohio.

There was no scoring in the first period. Each team went scoreless on two power-play chances in the stanza. OSU put eight shots on net and held the RedHawks to five.

OSU was outshot, 8-5, in the second period as the stanza again ended with no score. OSU goalie Mike Betz made some outstanding saves in the period, including two from point-blank range on Greg Hogeboom just under five minutes in.

Miami scored the lone goal of the game just 52 seconds into the third period, converting a shorthanded 3-on-1 chance, with Mike Kompon scoring. OSU pressed for the equalizer but could not get the puck past Miami’s David Burleigh. The squad pulled Betz with 1:02 remaining for the extra attacker. OSU had 11 shots in the period, Miami 10.

The Buckeyes outshot Miami in the game, 24-23. It was the lowest shot total for the Buckeyes in 12 games. Betz had 22 saves, Burleigh 24. It was the second time OSU has been shut out this season; the first was at Nebraska-Omaha Jan. 24.

Each team was 0-for-4 on the power play. The Buckeyes have stopped 29 of their opponent’s last 30 shots (96.7 percent).

The Buckeyes return to action with a two-game home series against Alaska Fairbanks next weekend. The squads will face off at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21 and at 8:05 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 in Value City Arena.
