OXFORD, Ohio – Four Buckeyes scored and three others posted two assists each to lead the No. 9/10 Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 4-1 victory over in-state and CCHA rival Miami Thursday in Goggin Ice Arena. The win extends the Buckeyes’ unbeaten streak to five and moves them within one point of first-place Ferris State in the CCHA with one game in hand.
OSU improves to 21-6-3 overall and 15-4-2 in CCHA play. The RedHawks fall to 16-13-2, 10-11-2 in league play. The victory gives the Buckeyes the Ohio Cup, a traveling trophy presented annually by the Buckeye Sports Bulletin to the Ohio-based CCHA team with the best record against its instate opponents. OSU went 4-0-0 in Ohio Cup play this year to clinch the trophy for the first time since 1999-00.
The Buckeyes and RedHawks will end their two-game series at 4:05 p.m. Saturday at Cincinnati Gardens in Cincinnati.
JB Bittner, Daymen Bencharski, Doug Andress and Chris Olsgard all scored for the Buckeyes, with three goals coming in special-team play (two power play, one shorthanded). Hobey Baker candidate R.J. Umberger, Dave Steckel and Paul Caponigri each had two helpers in the game.
OSU ended the first period leading, 1-0, on the strength of a Bittner 4-on-3 power-play goal at the 13:23 mark of the stanza, assisted by Caponigri and Umberger. The Buckeyes put 10 shots on net in the period, Miami eight. OSU was 1-for-2 on the power play in the period and held Miami scoreless on its one chance.
OSU outscored the RedHawks in the second period, 3-1, to head into the final stanza with a 4-1 lead. Bencharski scored just 1:33 into the period, beating Miami goalie David Burleigh with a wrist shot from the left circle. Caponigri had the helper on the goal. Andress scored a power-play goal just over a minute later (2:53), set up by Steckel and Umberger, getting a slap shot past Burleigh. Olsgard added to the Buckeye lead at the 10:03 mark, scoring an unassisted shorthanded goal. The RedHawks replaced Burleigh in goal with David Bowen following Olsgard’s goal. Miami got on the board with a power-play goal of its own, scored by Nick Jardine, at the 17:26 mark. That goal stopped OSU’s streak of consecutive power-plays killed at 24. OSU had 13 shots in the period, Miami 11.
There was no scoring in the third period, as the Buckeyes outshot Miami, 11-5. Each team had two power play chances but was unable to score.
For the game, OSU had 34 shots on goal and held Miami to 24. OSU’s Mike Betz had 23 saves to post his 52nd career win, a mark tied for second all-time in OSU history and just two short of the OSU record of 54 set by Bill McKenzie (1970-72). His goals-against average fell to a career-best 2.07 on the year.
OSU went 2-for-5 with the man advantage and held the RedHawks scoreless on 5-of-6 chances.
