COLUMBUS, Ohio – The eighth-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team, behind 35-points from Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario), remained undefeated at 18-0 overall and 8-0 in the Big Ten with a 3-1 (30-22, 28-30, 30-24, 30-23) victory over Michigan (14-5, 4-4) Saturday night in St. John Arena. Gordon had 31 kills, two ace serves, a solo block and two assists and contributed 10 digs and five assists. Gordon’s 31 kills gives her 2,384 for her career and makes her the all-time Big Ten career kills leader. She passed Nicole Branagh (1997-2000) of Minnesota who had 2,379. OSU’s Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) had 16 points with 14 kills, a solo block and two assist blocks. Michigan’s Katie Bruzdzinski had a team-high 22 points with 18 kills, two ace serves and two solo blocks. Erin Cobler contributed 15 points with 12 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and two assist blocks.

Ohio State, in game one, held a small lead during most of the match. Leading 23-30, a Buckeye error cut the lead to two at 23-21. Ohio State scored the next six points of the game to lead, 29-21. The run began with kills by Gordon and Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and an ace serve by Gordon as Michigan called time out. The run continued with a Michigan error, an OSU block by Stevens and Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and a Meyer kill. Danielle Pflum stopped the run with a kill at 29-22. Meyer scored the game winning point with a kill at 30-22. Ohio State hit .364 for the game to .235 for Michigan.

Tied at nine in game two, kills by McCarthy and Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) gave Ohio State an 11-9 lead. Michigan stayed close and tied the game at 17 with a Cobler kill. Three OSU errors gave Michigan a 20-17 lead. The Buckeyes would tie the game at 21 but kills by Lyndsay Miller and Cobler, an ace by Cobler and an OSU error made it 25-21, Michigan. At 28-25, a McCarthy-Meyer block and a Stevens kill cut the Wolverine lead to one at 28-27. A kill by Megan Bowman set game point at 29-27. A Stevens kill made it 29-28 but Bruzdzinski closed out the game with a kill at 30-28, tying the match at one game each. Michigan hit .390 in the game to .271 for Ohio State.

Ohio State, with a Gordon kill, took a 2-1 lead in game three and would never trail in the game. At 5-4, kills by Gordon and Stevens opened a 7-4 OSU lead. Michigan would close to 8-7 but kills by McCarthy and Stevens made it 10-7. At 13-10, a Gordon kill, a Michigan error and an ace serve by Main made it 16-10. Leading 28-24, kills from Meyer and Stevens ended the game at 30-24. The Wolverines out hit the Buckeyes, .303 to .295.

Trailing 2-1 in games, Michigan opened game four with a 2-0 lead. The Wolverines would take a 4-1 lead with a Miller kill. Trailing 12-9, Ohio State with two Gordon kills, a Main-Meyer block and a Michigan error took a 13-12 lead. Miller’s kill tied the game at 13. Tied at 16, a Pflum kill and an OSU error gave Michigan an 18-16 lead. A Meyer kill and a block by Stevens tied the game at 18. Tied at 19, three Michigan errors put Ohio State ahead, 22-19. A Buckeye error cut OSU’s lead to 22-20. A kill by Stevens and two Wolverine errors opened a 25-20 OSU lead. A Bruzdzinski kill cut the lead to four at 25-21 but Gordon responded with a kill to make it 26-21. A Gordon-Meyer block and a Miller kill moved the score to 27-22. A Buckeye error made it 27-23. Back-to-back kills by Gordon set game/match point at 29-23. Gordon’s solo block closed out the game at 30-23, ending the match at 3-1 for OSU. The Buckeyes hit .387 for the game to .130 for Michigan.

Ohio State hit .321 for the match to .260 for Michigan. The Buckeyes had a 73-63 margin in kills and a six-four advantage in ace serves. Defensively, Ohio State had a 60-52 margin in digs with OSU’s Brittany Dahms (Fr., Byron, Ill.) collecting a career-high 19. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 13 to 7.5 advantage in team blocks. Meyer, for Ohio State, had a match-high six assist blocks. Main for the Buckeyes had a match-high 55 assists adding nine kills, two aces and three blocks. Michigan’s Lisa Gamalski had 51 assists for the Wolverines.

Ohio State goes on the road next week as they face No. 5 Penn State (16-1, 7-1) Wednesday and No. 23 Illinois (13-4, 5-3) Saturday.
