COLUMBUS, Ohio-Penn State University, the No. 8 seed in the 2002 Big Ten Men’s Tennis Tournament, pulled off a defeat to No. 9 Michigan State in opening round play at the Stickney Tennis Center. PSU’s Brad Nudell clinched the match at the No. 3 position, defeating MSU’s Jimmy McGuire, 7-6(2), 6-4.

The Nittany Lions advance to the quarterfinal round to play No. 1 seed Illinois at 10 a.m. Friday.

Penn State earned the doubles point by defeating two of Michigan State’s three doubles teams. Jamie Gresh and Clint Keithley defeated Jimmy McGuire and Adam Hourani, 9-7, at the No. 1 position. Roddy Cantey and Todd Stecko defeated Chris Mitchell and Andy Formanczyk, 9-7, at the No. 3 position.

The Nittany Lions shut out the Spartans at the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Gresh defeated Mitchell, 6-1, 6-3. Matt Frakes defeated Cameron Marshall, 6-2, 6-3.
