COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team’s run at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship ended Sunday with a 4-3 loss to No. 6 ranked and No. 4 seed Cal. The No. 8 seed Buckeyes, ranked 16th, won the doubles point and two singles matches, but the Bears won the final two matches on court in three sets for the team victory.
The loss was the Buckeyes’ first of the season, as the squad is now 7-1. At the ITA Indoor Championship, Ohio State topped No. 30 ranked Fresno State in the first round and beat No. 1 ranked and top seed Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals. Ohio State was making its second appearance at the tournament and the first since 2001.
Next up, the Buckeyes will return home for two matches. Ohio State and Vanderbilt will meet at noon Saturday inside the Varsity Tennis Center. The Buckeyes will then host Georgia Tech at noon Sunday inside the VTC. Admission is free to all Buckeye home regular season matches.
“We put up a good fight today,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “Cal is a very good team. We had a good run but unfortunately came up a little short this afternoon.”
Ohio State won the first two doubles matches to clinch the doubles point for the first time in the tournament. At No. 3 the duo of sophomore Olivia Sneed and freshman Francesca Di Lorenzo posted a 6-4 win over Lyn Chi and Maria Smith of Cal. The Buckeyes are now 7-0 this spring.
Court one was a matchup of Top 10 ranked teams. The No. 6-ranked Buckeye duo of sophomore Anna Sanford and junior Miho Kowase prevailed in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), over no. 3-ranked Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr. The Buckeyes had to break to send the match to the tiebreaker.
Cal tied the match at one when No. 10-ranked Fabikova defeated De Santis, 6-2, 6-1, on court two. In a battle of Top 5 players, Di Lorenzo, ranked second, defeated No. 5 Manasse, 6-2, 7-6 (2), to put Ohio State ahead, 2-1. Cal’s No. 81-ranked Hauger then won on court five over Angeles Paz, 6-4, 6-4, to tie the team match score at two. The loss was the first for Angeles Paz this spring.
The last three matches were decided in a third set. Buckeye Sanford rallied after dropping the first set against Chi to win in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3. Cal’s Starr tied the match with a win over Kowase on court four, as she came back after losing the first set for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win. The match was decided on court six. The Bears’ Popovic won the first set, 6-2, before Sneed tied the match with a 6-1 win in the second set. In the deciding third set, Popovic prevailed 6-3 to clinch the match for Cal and a spot in the ITA Indoors final vs. North Carolina. Sneed’s seven-match winning streak was ended with the loss.
