POTSDAM, N.Y. – Buckeye sophomore defenseman Sean Collins scored a power-play goal in the third period to lift the No. 8 Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 3-all tie with Clarkson Friday in Cheel Arena. Junior Rod Pelley had a team-high two points on a goal and an assist.

The teams will end the two-game non-conference series at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cheel Arena in Potsdam. With the tie, Ohio State moves to 11-4-2 (9-2-1 CCHA) on the year and the Golden Knights move to 3-11-2. Ohio State is undefeated in its last four games (2-0-2), while Clarkson is on a seven-game (0-5-2) winless streak.

In the first, the Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead on Tom Fritsche’s (Fr., Parma, Ohio) goal at 4:14, assisted by John Dingle and Domenic Maiani (Fr., Shelby Township, Mich.). The Buckeyes almost made it 2-0 with four minutes remaining, but Matt Beaudoin’s (So., Rock Forest, Quebec) shot went off the pipe. Ohio State outshot the Golden Knights, 9-6, in the period. The Buckeyes stopped Clarkson on two power-play chances and were 0-for-1.

The second period ended with Ohio State trailing, 3-2. The Golden Knights tied the game with a power-play goal by Mike Sullivan 5:25 into the period. Pelley (Jr., Kitimat, British Columbia) responded with a goal just 16 seconds later, assisted by Beaudoin and Nate Guenin (Jr., Aliquippa, Pa.). Clarkson then scored back-to-back goals to tie the game and take the lead. Nick Dodge scored at 13:18, followed by a Jay Latulippe power-play tally with just 38 seconds remaining. The Buckeyes were outshot in the period, 13-8. The Buckeyes did not score on their one power-play chance, while the Golden Knights converted two of four chances.

The Buckeyes tied the game at three on Collins’ (So., Troy, Mich.) power-play goal at 8:12 of the third, assisted by Pelley and Maiani. OSU outshot the Golden Knights in the period, 13-7. The Buckeyes scored once on two power-play chances in the period and stopped Clarkson on one opportunity.

There was no scoring and neither team got off a shot in the overtime period.

In the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Golden Knights, 30-26. Junior Dave Caruso (Jr., Roswell, Ga.) made 23 saves in the game, while Clarkson goalie Kyle McNulty had 27 saves. Each goalie played 65 minutes.

Ohio State scored once on four power-play chances and Clarkson was 2-for-7 with the man advantage.

Game Notes
Pelley’s goal was the 50th point of his Buckeye career and set a career high with his 11th goal of the season. He took the team scoring lead with 18 points on the year.

This marks the second time this season Ohio State has come back to tie the game after trailing entering the third period. OSU came back from two goals down to tie Nebraska-Omaha Nov. 20.

The tie is the second for the Buckeyes this season. The team ended last season with no ties in 42 games.

The series between Clarkson and Ohio State remains tied at 6-6-2. In Potsdam, Clarkson leads 2-1-2.

Guenin has an assist in each of the last three games. Collins has goals in back-to-back games. Pelley is on a four-point scoring streak, with 3-2-5 totals.

The game Saturday against Clarkson ends the first part of Ohio State’s season. The team will return to action in the Ohio Hockey Classic Dec. 29-30 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.
