COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team defeated Michigan State University (5-2) by a score of 165 to 123 Saturday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The win for the No. 8-ranked Buckeyes improved their record to 7-0 on the season.
The Buckeyes stormed out to an early lead behind great swims from the 200 medley relay teams, with both teams within a second of each other and finishing in first and second.
Brent Hitchcock followed the relay win with the best 1000 freestyle swim of the year. Hitchcock also won the 500 freestyle later in the meet. Two freshmen followed him in both races. Ty Perkins finished second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 1000 freestyle and Alex Miller took third in the 500 and second in the 1000.
The distance swimmers have come along nicely continue to impress head coach Bill Wadley.
“They did great today, just as everyone did,” Wadley said. “Tim Phillips had a great day and so did Justin Farra. Everyone swam well today.”
Phillips won the 100 and 200 freestyle and was a part of the first place 200 freestyle relay team and Farra finished first in three individual events; the 100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley.
“Our objective is to race hard no matter how our bodies feel day in and day out,” Wadley said. “I thought we raced hard today and hopefully we can continue this into next week and into the end of the season.”
Ohio State won every event on the day and proved that it could consistently put up points in every race on the board.
“How often can you win every race against a Big Ten team?” Wadley said. “The question is: can we keep getting better and how good can we be at the end of the season?”
The diving team also picked up a win in their home pool with Shane Miszkiel winning the three-meter dive event, narrowly defeating his freshman classmate Christian Holstein.
Ohio State will be seeing plenty more of its Big Ten competition next weekend in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Buckeyes will take on Penn State, Michigan and Northwestern in a quad meet on January 28-29.
