SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Bryce Anderson’s goal 1:04 into overtime lifted the No. 8/9 Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 3-2 win over Lake Superior State in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game Saturday in Taffy Abel Arena. The Buckeyes entered the third period down by a goal (2-1), but scored two unanswered goals for the victory.

The win, OSU’s fourth in a row, gives the Buckeyes the sweep of the Lakers after a 3-1 win Friday. OSU improves to 20-7-3 on the year and 17-4-1 in the CCHA, marking OSU’s fourth consecutive 20-win season. The Lakers drop to 7-15-6 and 6-9-5 in league play on the year.

The Lakers ended the first period with a 1-0 lead on the strength of Colin Nicholson’s power-play goal at 6:30. Each team had six shots on goal in the period.

The Buckeyes tied the game 8:53 into the second, as Kyle Hood (Fr., Osoyoos, British Columbia) scored on the rebound of a Nate Guenin (Jr., Aliquippa, Pa.) shot, with Matt McIlvane (Fr., Naperville, Ill.) picking up the second assist. Lake Superior State tied the game less than two minutes (10:45) later when Ren Fauci scored his second goal of the weekend with the Lakers on the power play. Each team had five shots in the period.

Ohio State tied the game 1:45 into the third, as Dan Knapp (Jr., Rochester, Mich.) scored, assisted by Matt Waddell (So., Armstrong, British Columbia). The Buckeyes took the play to the Lakers in the period, outshooting them, 9-2.

The Buckeyes scored on the first shot on goal of overtime, as Anderson’s (So., Waterloo, Iowa) shot as he was falling got past LSSU goalie Jeff Jakaitis. Tom Fritsche (Fr., Parma, Ohio) and Domenic Maiani (Fr., Shelby Township, Mich.) picked up the assists, as they were cycling the puck with Anderson deep in the LSSU zone.

In the game, the Buckeyes were scoreless on two power-play chances, while the Lakers converted 2-of-3.

Ohio State outshot the Lakers in the game, 21-13. Buckeye junior goalie Dave Caruso made 11 saves, while Jakaitis had 18 stops for LSSU.

Postgame Notes
Ohio State returns to action with a two-game home series against Bowling Green next weekend. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Feb. 11-12.

This is the first time Ohio State has had four consecutive 20 or more win seasons in a row. Under head coach John Markell, OSU has six 20 or more seasons in 10 years.

Ohio State now is 2-1-3 in overtime games this season. The game marked the team’s first third-period comeback win of the season and now is 1-5-2 when trailing after two periods.

Guenin marked his 100th career game in the contest.

The sweep was OSU’s second consecutive in league play and its eighth two-game series sweep this season.

The Lakers 13 shots in the game marked an opponent season low for the Buckeyes this season. The previous low as 18 against Alaska Fairbanks Dec. 4.

The game was the first time Ohio State gave up more than one power play goal since Dec. 11 at Clarkson.
