SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Buckeye junior Rod Pelley scored twice and classmate Dan Knapp had two assists as the No. 8/9 Ohio State men’s hockey team defeated Lake Superior State, 3-1, in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game Friday in Taffy Abel Arena. The teams will end the two-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.

With the win, OSU’s third in a row, the Buckeyes improve to 19-7-3 on the year and 16-4-1 in the CCHA. Second-place OSU climbed to within two points of first-place Michigan after the Wolverines tied Michigan State Friday. The Lakers fall to 7-14-6 and 6-8-5 in league play on the year.

Ohio State took a 1-0 lead 3:27 into the game, as Pelley (Jr., Kitimat, British Columbia) took passes from JB Bittner (Sr., Pittsburg, Pa.) and Dan Knapp (Jr., Rochester, Mich.) and beat LSSU goalie Jeff Jakaitis high on the blocker side. The Buckeyes were outshot in the period, 6-5.

The Buckeyes made the score 2-0 at the 11:54 mark of the second period, when Domenic Maiani (Fr., Shelby Township, Mich.) took a cross-crease pass and one-timed a Knapp pas into the open net from the far side, as Jakaitis was still near side. Bryce Anderson (So., Waterloo, Iowa) picked up the second assist on the goal. The Lakers cut the lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal of their own at 16:15 when Ren Fauci’s shot from the point got through. The Lakers outshot the Buckeyes in the period, 11-8.

There was no scoring in the third until Pelley sealed the win for the Buckeyes with an empty-net, power-play goal with 19 seconds remaining. The Buckeyes held the Lakers scoreless on three power-play chances in the period and Buckeye goalie Dave Caruso (Jr., Roswell, Ga.) stopped seven LSSU attempts. OSU had nine shots in the period. Ohio State converted 2-of-5 power-plays chances in the game and the Lakers were 1-for-7.

The Buckeyes were outshot in the game, 24-22. Caruso made 23 saves, while Jakaitis had 19 saves.

Postgame Notes
The game was Pelley’s third two-goal outing of the season. He has a team and league-best 11 power-play goals this year. Pelley has a career-best 30 points on the year, his first 30-point year.

Knapp’s two assists marked his first multiple-point game since Dec. 4 vs. Alaska Fairbanks.

OSU’s power play scored more than one goal for the third game in a row. OSU is 8-for-16 (50 percent) in the last three games combined with the man advantage.

The Lakers’ power-play goal ended the Buckeyes’ streak of consecutive penalties killed at 15. OSU last allowed a power-play goal against Michigan Jan. 8.

The Buckeyes’ 22 shots were the third-lowest total of the season. The squad had a season-low 18 at New Hampshire in the season opener Oct. 9 and 20 at Ferris State Oct. 14.

Matt Beaudoin’s goal and point-scoring streaks were stopped at four.

Anderson now has a career-best 12 points this season.
