COLUMBUS, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Ohio State (19-1 overall, 9-1 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, despite a match-high 24 kills from Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) lost at No. 24 Illinois (14-5, 6-4), 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-24) Saturday night. The Buckeye loss ended a 19-match winning streak by Ohio State. Gordon had 25.5 points with a match-high 24 kills, one ace serve and one assist block. Illinois’ Rasa Virsilaite recorded 21 points with 16 kills, three ace serves, a solo block and two assists blocks. Rachel VanMeter added 20.5 points with 19 kills and three assist blocks for Illinois.

Illinois broke a six-all tie with two VanMeter kills and a block by Meghan Macdonald. The Illini opened up several five-point leads, the last at 29-24. An Illinio error and a kill by OSU’s Danielle Meyer cut the lead to three at 29-26, but Van Meter’s kill ended the game at 30-26. In the game, Ohio State outhit Illinois, .429 to .350.

Tied at one-all, Illinois scored five straight points to open a 6-1 lead in game two. The Illini continued to build the lead to eight, winning the game, 30-22. Illinois hit .526 for the game to .167 for Ohio State.

Game three saw the Illini take a 10-5 lead. Trailing, 25-17, two Gordon kills, one by Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) and an Illinois error cut the Illinois lead to 25-21. A Virsilaite kill made it 26-21. A Gordon kill and an Illinois error cut the lead to 26-23. Illini kills by Virsilaite and Jen Hynds opened a 28-23 lead. Kills by Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) and VanMeter moved the score to 29-24. A VanMeter kill ended the game at 30-24 and the match, 3-0. Illinois hit .289 for the game to .158 for Ohio State.

For the match, Illinois hit .377 to Ohio State’s .248. The Illini had a 54-50 margin in kills and a six to one advantage in ace serves. Illinois had five service errors to three for Ohio State. Defensively, The Buckeyes had a 33-32 margin in digs while the Illini out blocked Ohio State, 12 to five.

Ohio State returns home next week to host Purdue and Indiana. OSU hosts Purdue at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29 and Indiana at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 31.
