COLUMBUS, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Ohio State (20-1 overall, 10-1 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, behind a 30-point performance by Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) defeated Purdue (11-10, 4-7), 3-0 (36-34, 30-23, 30-28) Friday night in St. John Arena. Gordon scored a match-high 29 kills, adding an ace serve for the Buckeyes. OSU’s Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) had 15 points (13 kills, 1 solo, 2 assist blocks) and Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) added 14.5 (13 kills, 1 ace, 1 assist block) in the match. Purdue’s Kim McConaha had a team-high 14.5 points (12 kills, 2 solo, 1 assist block) with Leah Wischmeier adding 13 (13 kills) and Samantha Mader 10 (10 kills) for the Boilermakers.

In a close game one, Ohio State held a 28-25 lead before kills by Elizabeth Jacques and Mader and an ace serve by Jacques tied the game at 28. A Steven kill made it 29-28, OSU. Mader countered with a kill at 29-29. Service errors by both teams made it 30-30. Purdue took a 31-30 lead with a McConaha kill. Gordon’s kill tied the game at 31. Kills by McConaha (32-31, Purdue) and Gordon moved the score to 32-all. A Wischmeier kill put Purdue ahead, 33-32. Gordon tied the game at 33 with a kill. A Purdue error made it 34-33, OSU. Another Wischmeier kill tied the game at 34. Gordon responded with a kill to make it 35-34. A Boilermaker error ended the game at 36-34 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit .348 in the game to .265 for Purdue.

Purdue held an 8-7 lead in game two before Ohio State scored five straight points with two Gordon kills, a kill from Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.), a Meyer-Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) block and a Meyer kill to open a 12-8 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead and with Gordon’s 11th kill of the game, won 30-23. Ohio State hit .432 for the game to .244 for Purdue.

Purdue broke a one-all tie in game three with a five-point run with a McConaha solo block, two aces from Melanie Ukovich and kills by Mader and McConaha to take a 6-1 lead. The Buckeyes closed to 6-5 with kills from Gordon, Mapp and two from Stevens. Tied at 14, a Steven’s kill and solo block gave OSU a 16-14 lead. Leading 23-21, two Buckeye errors tied the game at 23. Tied at 24, kills by Gordon and Stevens and a Nicole Britenriker (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio)-Stevens block gave OSU a 27-24 lead. Purdue kills by Renata Dargan and Wischmeier cut the OSU lead to 27-26. Buckeye kills by Britenriker and Gordon set match point at 29-26. A Wischmeier kill and an OSU error cut the lead to 29-28. Britenriker’s kill was ruled down to end the game at 30-28 and the match, 3-0 for OSU. For the game, Ohio State hit .348 to Purdue’s .220.

Ohio State hit .375 for the match to .244 for Purdue. The Buckeyes had a 70-53 margin in kills while Purdue had a 3-2 advantage in ace serves. Each squad gave up five service errors. Ohio State had a 54-42 margin in digs with OSU’s Brittany Dahms (Fr., Byron, Ill.) recording a match-high 15. At the net, the Buckeyes had a seven to four advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Stevens (1 solo, 2 assists) and Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) (2-1) and Purdue’s McConaha (2-1) shared match high honors with three blocks each. OSU’s Main recorded 54 assists in the match to 41 for Purdue’s Dargan.

Ohio State continues Big Ten play when they host Indiana (8-14, 2-9) Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in St. John Arena. Indiana lost 3-0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-27) at sixth-ranked Penn State Friday night.
