COLUMBUS, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team stayed undefeated tonight at 19-0 overall and 9-0 in the Big Ten with a 3-2 (30-25, 22-30, 30-26, 26-30, 15-11) victory over fifth-ranked Penn State (16-2, 7-2) in University Park, Pa. Ohio State’s Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 39 points for the Buckeyes with Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.) adding 17.5 points, Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio), 13.5 and Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio), 12.5. Penn State’s Ashley Pederson had a team-high 23 points for the Nittany Lions with Kate Price adding 21. PSU’s Syndie Nadeau had 18.5 points, Cassy Salyer, 14.5 and Melissa Walbridge contributed 14 points.

In game one, a Mapp kill tied the game at nine. A Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.)-Mapp block and a Main kill gave Ohio State an 11-9 lead. Penn State would close to within one on three occasions, the last at 14-13 with a Salyer-Pederson block. Two Penn State errors and a kill by Stevens made the Ohio State lead, 17-13. The Buckeyes held the lead and went ahead, 28-24, with a Gordon kill. A Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) solo block set game point at 29-24. A Nadeau kill cut the lead to 29-25 but Gordon closed the game with a kill at 30-25. Ohio State hit .385 for the game to .191 for Penn State.

Penn State broke a two-all tie in game two with a five-point run to take a 7-2 lead. Ohio State came back with a four-point run to trail, 7-6. The Nittany Lions responded with a six-point run to open a 13-6 lead. Penn State extended the lead to 12 at 23-11. The Buckeyes would out score Penn State 11 to seven in the later stages of the game but Price’s kill ended the game at 30-22. The Nittany Lions hit .340 for the game to .178 for the Buckeyes. Penn State jumped to a 7-1 lead in game three, helped by four OSU attack errors. The Buckeyes slowly cut the lead until trailing, 21-19, a Gordon kill and a Meyer-Stevens block tied the game at 21. Kills by Price and Stevens moved the score to 22-all. A Steven’s kill put Ohio State ahead, 23-22, as Penn State called time out. Gordon and Pederson exchanged kills and with kills from Meyer and Gordon, Ohio State took a 26-23 lead as Penn State call time out. A Penn State block by Sam Tortorello and Walbridge made it 26-24. A Nittany Lion error made it 27-24. Gordon and Pederson each recorded a kill to move the score to 28-25. A McCarthy-Mapp block set game point at 29-25. Price responded with a kill to stop the game point at 29-26. Gordon came back with her 13th kill of the game to close it out at 30-26. The Buckeyes hit .340 for the game to .310 for Penn State.

Game four had nine lead changes and 17 ties, the last at 26-all with a Pederson kill. A Walbridge-Nadeau block put Penn State ahead at 27-26. Another Pederson kill made it 28-26 as Ohio State called time out. A Nadeau kill set game point at 29-26 and a Nadeau-Walbridge block closed out the game at 30-26 to tie the match at two games each. Penn State hit .312 for the game to Ohio State’s .214.

The deciding fifth game opened with a Mapp kill followed by one from Nadeau to tie the game at one. A Mapp kill and two blocks from Main and Mapp gave Ohio State a 4-1 lead. Kills from Nadeau and Mapp moved the score to 5-2. A Price kill and an OSU error closed the score to 5-4, Buckeyes. A Meyer kill and a solo block by Stevens made it 7-4, OSU. With a kill from Penn State’s Tortorello and two Buckeye errors, the Nittany Lions tied the game at seven as Ohio State called time out. A Gordon kill was offset by a Pederson-Walbridge block to make it eight-all. Two Penn State errors opened a 10-8 Ohio State lead as the Nittany Lions called time out. An Ohio State service error cut the lead to 10-9. Kills by Gordon and Price moved the score to 11-10, Buckeyes. A Penn State block by Price and Salyer tied the game at 11. A Gordon kill returned the lead to Ohio State at 12-11. With Gordon serving, a Main-Mapp block made it 13-11, OSU, as Penn State called time out. A Nittany Lion attack error set game/match point at 14-11. Gordon’s ace serve ended the game at 15-11 and closed the match, 3-2, for the Buckeyes. Ohio State hit .111 in the fifth game to Penn State’s -.111

For the match, Ohio State out hit Penn State, .263 to .254. The Nittany Lions edged the Buckeyes in kills, 83-80. Ohio State had a six to one advantage in ace serves with Gordon and Brittany Dahms (Fr., Byron, Ill.) collecting two aces each. The Buckeyes gave up six service errors to five for the Nittany Lions. Defensively, Penn State had a 78-72 margin in digs with Kaleena Walters recording a match-high 21 digs for the Buckeyes. OSU’s Rebecca Kastein (Jr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) had a career-high 19 digs for the Buckeyes. At the net, Ohio State had a 17-13 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Mapp had a match-high eight total blocks with one solo and seven assists. PSU’s Nadeau and Salyer each collected seven assist blocks. Penn State’s Tortorello had a match-high 74 assists adding 10 digs, four kills and two assist blocks. OSU’s Main recorded 64 assists adding, 12 digs, five kills and a career-high six total blocks with a solo and five assists.

Ohio State will continue on the road this week when they travel to 24th-ranked Illinois (13-4, 5-3) Saturday night.

BUCKEYE NOTES:

Rebecca Kastein had a career-high 19 digs in the match. Her previous best was 18 against North Carolina this season.

Stacey Gordon tied her season-high of 36 kills tonight previously set against Minnesota. She had a career-high 79 attack attempts in the match.

Marisa Main equaled her career-high of five assist blocks against Penn State. Her previous best was at Temple in 2003 when she played at Xavier. Her six total blocks (one solo and five assists) is her career-high, her previous was five assists at Temple in 2003.

Maya Mapp recorded a season-high seven assist blocks against Penn State. She had a season-high eight total blocks (one solo, seven assists). Her previous best this season were five assist blocks and six total blocks (1-5) against Xavier.

Ohio State had team season highs of 80 kills, 77 assists, 72 digs and 17 total blocks against Penn State.

The Ohio State win was the first at Penn State since a 3-0 win in 2001. In the last four years (Stacey Gordon’s career), the Buckeyes have won four of seven.

Marisa Main’s 64 assists give her 977 this season and moves her to eighth in OSU career assists passing Danielle Berlein (1987) with 927.

Stacey Gordon’s 16 digs against the Nittany Lions gives her 1,335 career digs and moves her to second on the OSU career digs list passing Lisa Vitali (1986-89) who has 1,331. Gordon needs seven digs to pass OSU career leader Leisa Wissler (1988-91) who has 1,341.
