COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team defeated Wright State University (2-5) by a score of 175-90 Friday evening at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The win stretched Ohio State’s streak to 58 consecutive wins over in-state opponents and improved the team’s record to 6-0 this season.
Ohio State swept the first three places in seven events and won 14 of the 16 events Friday against the Raiders. Senior captain Ben Savonen won the 200 individual medley, while the two junior captains also added wins with Andrew Elliott winning the 200 backstroke and Lincoln Fahrbach winning the 50 freestyle. Head coach Bill Wadley was happy with the first meet of the New Year.
“We have been training very hard and it’s excellent for our swimmers to keep getting better,” Wadley said. “Getting exponentially faster each meet is a good thing.”
The Buckeyes had three swimmers win their first events of the year including junior Stephen Sakaris, a winner in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.08. Also winning their first events of the year were seniors Phil Seleskie and freshman Alex Miller. They won the 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle races, respectively.
“I thought it was big for (Stephen) Sakaris to get his first win of the year,” Wadley said. “He swam a great freestyle. There were also some very good things from Phillip Seleskie.”
Senior Bobby Jenrow had a strong showing and picked up wins in the 200 butterfly in 1:50.48 and in the 200 backstroke in 1:51.87.
“Bobby swam very well tonight,” Wadley said. “He has been working very hard along with everyone else on this team.”
Freshman Christian Holstein was victorious on both the one- and three-meter boards. He had winning scores of 351.0 points on three-meter and 301.85 on one-meter.
Big Ten competition starts when the Michigan State Spartans visit McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on January 22 at 1 p.m.
