EAST LANSING, Mich. – The No. 7 Ohio State men’s hockey team used points from 11 players to defeat Michigan State, 5-1, Saturday in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game in Munn Ice Arena. Dan Knapp had a team-best three assists and points in the game, while Dave Barton and Domenic Maiani each had a goal and an assist.

Ohio State improves to 20-5-1 in CCHA action and 23-8-3 overall. The Spartans fall to 14-14-4 and 9-12-3 in league play. The win gives the Buckeyes a two-game series split with the Spartans.

Ohio State got on the board first, as Matt Beaudoin (So., Rock Forest, Quebec) scored 6:08 into the game on a delayed penalty. Matt Waddell (So., Armstrong, British Columbia) had the first assist, as he carried the puck into the zone before passing to Beaudoin in the slot. Dave Barton (So., Calgary, Alberta) had the second assist on the goal. The Buckeyes outshot the Spartans in the period, 12-6.

The Buckeyes outscored the Spartans in the second period, 3-1. Barton made the score 2-0 with a power-play goal at 4:37, putting in the rebound of a Maiani (Fr., Shelby Township, Mich.) shot, with Knapp (Jr., Rochester, Mich.) picking up the second assist. The Spartans got on the board when Jim Slater scored on the power play less than a minute later (5:29), as his shot got past a screened Dave Caruso (Jr., Roswell, Ga.) in net. Jason DeSantis (Oxford, Mich.) regained OSU’s two-goal lead just over a minute later, when he put in a loose puck at 6:57. Knapp and JB Bittner (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) assisted on the goal, as they were fighting to get the puck in the net. Pelley made the score 4-1 with a power-play goal of his own at 15:51, as his shot from the point got through. Kyle Hood (Fr., Osoyoos, British Columbia) and Tom Fritsche (Fr., Parma, Ohio) assisted on the goal. The Buckeyes had nine shots on goal in the period, MSU six. Maiani socored the only goal of the third period, as Nate Guenin (So., Aliquppa, Pa.) found him right by the net with OSU on the power play, making the score 5-1 at 17:14. Knapp had the second assist on the goal, giving him a career-best three helpers. OSU outshot MSU in the stanza, 15-3.

Ohio State outshot the Spartans in the game, 36-15. Caruso had 14 saves, while MSU goalie Dominic Vicari had 31.

Ohio State ended the game 3-for-9 on the power play and MSU was 1-for-6.

Postgame Notes
Ohio State has a bye weekend before closing out the regular season with a home-and-home series with Miami. The teams will meet in Oxford, Ohio, March 4 and in Columbus, Ohio, March 5.

Hood extended his scoring streak to five, with 2-4-6 in the stretch. Beaudoin extended his scoring streak to four (4-1-5).

The game was the 18th time this season the Buckeyes had multiple power-play goals. OSU is 16-1-1 in those games.
