Buckeyes end season in first round of the Big Ten field hockey tournament
COLUMBUS, Ohio The fifth-seeded Ohio State field hockey team fell to No. 4 Penn State by a score of 3-0 Thursday to conclude the 2007 season in the first round of the Big Ten tournament, hosted by OSU at North Turf Field. The Buckeyes wrap up the season with a 6-12 overall record after finishing fifth in the league at 2-4. Penn State is 13-6 overall (4-2 Big Ten).
Sophomore Lindsay Quintiliani had another strong game with five saves, after saving seven shots against Penn State the last time the teams played, Oct. 26. The native of Mountain Top, Pa., finished her second season as a starter with a 5-10 record, 2.27 goals-against average and .653 save percentage.
Ohio State trailed by one goal heading into the intermission after Britney Long of the Nittany Lions scored at 24:03 on a pass from Shaun Banta while the two were charging toward the Buckeye goal.
Penn State pulled away with two goals in the second half for a 3-0 final. Mallory Weisen converted on a penalty stroke at 39:37 and Long followed with her second goal of the game at 57:43, tapping in the ball during a scramble in front of the net.
For the game, the Nittany Lions had a 10-3 advantage in shots and 5-1 edge in penalty corners.
Senior Yesenia Luces had two of the three OSU shots in the final game of her outstanding Buckeye career. The midfielder from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, concludes her career with 123 points on 44 goals and 35 assists in 78 games played. In the Ohio State record books, Luces ranks fourth all-time in points, third in assists and fifth in goals. Earlier this season, she became just the sixth Buckeye in more than 40 years of the Ohio State field hockey program to reach the 100-point milestone.
The 2007 Big Ten Tournament will continue Friday with two semifinal games at North Turf Field. No. 1-seed Michigan faces Penn State at noon, followed by No. 2 Michigan State vs. No. 3 Iowa at 2 p.m. Both games will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
